What Could Possibly Be Bad About Hawaii?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

When I first began discussions with my husband about buying a house in Hawaii, I bought a few books from Amazon about moving to Hawaii. There were a few horror tales. I'll never forget the story about the woman who could not deal with flying B52 bombers smacking her in the face. And the fact trees can grow 10 feet almost overnight, coupled with the need for constant pest control.

One book made it sound like a nightmare with the humidity, limited water, overpopulation of Oahu and sewer problems. It made me decide that Oahu is a fun island to visit, but I leaned more toward living in a city on a quieter island.

Big Island has such diverse geography and climate zones, from 80 degrees on the beach to snow on Maunakea. Not to mention, the people are extremely friendly and trusting. It reminds me of my childhood. Back when you could hop on your bike and go over to your friend's house without a second thought. Unlike today's micromanagement parenting when kids have to make a stinkin' appointment.

Well, you can read more and see all of my photographs on this subject in my personal blog today at this link: The Downside to Living in Paradise in Hawaii.

Can't get away from pesky bugs, Elizabeth, especially if you own a piece of "dirt". And every owner has his/her own way of handling them. Remember when we had lunch at La Mariana Sailing Club and they had that plastic bag with pennies in them which is supposed to keep flies away? I was there a couple of days ago and I guess the flies hadn't read the memo about staying away.

Hella Mitschke Rothwell Yes, we never found out whether it was true. Too busy eating -- still recall that asparagus, sweet, tender. So I just ran a SNOPES check and it seems to be unproven. In fact, in some cases, it actually attracts flies.

I could handle living in Hawaii, no problem.  During the late 70s and 1980s, I owned a couple side by side lots near Pahoa, where Cathy McAlister has her property.  I had dreams of building and moving there.  But, life got into mischief.

Myrl Jeffcoat Now there are too many frogs over in Pahoa, not to mention the creeping lava. Life is always exciting here! And your family would never forgive you if you moved to Hawaii, Myrl!

Elizabeth- I don't think you'd like it here in South Florida then. Lizards, iguanas, alligators, no-see-ums, piss ants, large cockroaches, and I almost forgot the invasive pythons. Add that to our visitors from the north and you'd need a large adult beverage.

My objection to south Florida is not really the critters, Kathy. Although I used to joke that it's just bugs and old people, I know today it's really the humidity.

Good afternoon Elizabeth. I guess everywhere has its highs and lows but I think og Hawaii as largely wonderful.

Hi Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents, I was going to say what Kathy Streib said, it's a jungle in FL. Palmetto bugs are the worst for me.

Sheila Anderson I especially like the weather. This winter, for example, I've not yet had to turn on the AC. It's not miserably hot like it is in Florida. It's just perfect.

Beth Atalay There don't seem to be as many things that can kill you in Hawaii unless you count sharks and oleander and desert roses. Not even lava flows are all that dangerous, especially if you don't live on the east.

Elizabeth, we don't have many bugs, so that would be tough to get used to, and flies are even scarce.

Joan Cox It's amazing how fast one adapts, though. We still have a gecko in the house we tried twice to shoo outside and it keeps getting away.
