Have you ever been to Muir Woods National Monument?

 www.endrebarath.com

Diane and I have been there once, when my parents were visiting us. We went, strictly because, my dad insisted on seeing Muir Woods. Thanks to my dad we had a truly enjoyable  day and we all were amazed at this magnificent park.  Ever since then, we have been talking about it for the past 15+ years what a great time we had.

Now we can finally say that, we have been there a second time, this time, because my friend’s wife wanted to visit the Sequoias. She thought this would be such a wonderful opportunity to see these thousand-year-old and older trees, in light of the fact, that we were staying for a couple days in San Francisco it was a skip hop from the city. This park is truly an incredible part of American history and nature.

In case you are not familiar with Muir Woods National Monument, it is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is one of more than 400 national park units across the country.

If you decide to visit, please plan on spending a few hours in the park, exploring the trails or points of interests. If time permits you might want to consider a longer hike. We did not do that either time, but might consider it if we go back a third time.

Guided walks and tours occur at various times, please check with a ranger for program available on the day of your visit.

In case you are interested in the history of the park: On January 9th,1908 President Theodore Roosevelt declared the land a National Monument. This was the first National Monument created from land that was donated by a private individual. First, they considered naming it Kent Monument, but Mr. Kent insisted that the monument should be named after the naturalist John Muir whose environmental campaigns helped to establish the National Park system.

Unless you delve into the true history of these magnificent creatures you have no idea how old and how amazing they are! I am reading a nonfiction book called The Wild Trees about old growth redwoods, douglas firs, Sequoias, some being thousands of years old!! The energy in this place must be electrifying in its quiet way. John Muir is one of my favorite naturalists...I've read lots about him. And thank goodness for the passion for nature by President Roosevelt who saved so many parts of America that could have been taken down by stupid humans!

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Real Estate  great elaboration on these magnificent trees. there is a slice that they broke down and showed it was over 1000 years old and put lines where certain events happened in the world quite amazing. Just as an example when Columbus Landed...when the Declaration of Independence was signed....when WWII ended and the list goes on and on...Endre

I sure wanted to 4 months ago when I was in SF for a day and then Napa for the week. Once I crossed the Golden Gate Bridge for my first time, what a thrill it was too!, I planned to sidestep over to Muir Woods. Oh my gosh, the traffic lines going to see Sequoia trees were hours long. I had to postpone, but next time....

I have visited the Trees of Mystery in Redwoods National Park - years ago when my son was quite young.  He loved the statue of Paul Bunyan. Ha. I think they've added all sorts of curiosities. For me, the trees are the real stars of the show. I haven't been to the Muir monument in SF, but will make a point of it now. I'm sure you all reaped the benefits of spending time around the huge trees - I can see why you wanted me to check out this post...you get the entire concept of ViewHomes. :)

Endre, Great that you got a chance to go there a second time.  I was there years ago and I remember the coolness as we walked and the wonderful smell of the trees.  Such a peaceful place among gentle giants.

I was just sitting here thinking.  As close to Muir Woods as I live, I've never been there.  I'm only about an hour and a half away.  I'm going to plan a little visit to there.
