Have you ever been to Muir Woods National Monument?
Diane and I have been there once, when my parents were visiting us. We went, strictly because, my dad insisted on seeing Muir Woods. Thanks to my dad we had a truly enjoyable day and we all were amazed at this magnificent park. Ever since then, we have been talking about it for the past 15+ years what a great time we had.
Now we can finally say that, we have been there a second time, this time, because my friend’s wife wanted to visit the Sequoias. She thought this would be such a wonderful opportunity to see these thousand-year-old and older trees, in light of the fact, that we were staying for a couple days in San Francisco it was a skip hop from the city. This park is truly an incredible part of American history and nature.
In case you are not familiar with Muir Woods National Monument, it is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is one of more than 400 national park units across the country.
If you decide to visit, please plan on spending a few hours in the park, exploring the trails or points of interests. If time permits you might want to consider a longer hike. We did not do that either time, but might consider it if we go back a third time.
Guided walks and tours occur at various times, please check with a ranger for program available on the day of your visit.
In case you are interested in the history of the park: On January 9th,1908 President Theodore Roosevelt declared the land a National Monument. This was the first National Monument created from land that was donated by a private individual. First, they considered naming it Kent Monument, but Mr. Kent insisted that the monument should be named after the naturalist John Muir whose environmental campaigns helped to establish the National Park system.
