Now that I have had 8 years of experience in Real Estate, I feel as if I truly could guide a new agent on the path to success. Friends have asked in the past about getting into real estate and I believe that my answers have varied, depending on the person asking. I like the questions posed in the contest and I will attempt to answer them with my experiences in mind.

What I wish I had known from the beginning is difficult for me to answer.  I wish I had of known as much as I do now, back then, but that simply is not possible for anyone starting out, haha.  It comes with experience, so my advice here would be to just get out and do it and don't be afraid to ask many questions of your mentor.

It seems that throughout my real estate career, there have been many times that I have questioned whether I should be doing this or something else.  I have even had times where I interviewed for other jobs, but nothing ever came of it and I was forced to make real estate work, haha.  My advice here would be that real estate is certainly a roller coaster career, so know that it is not just you struggling when you struggle, all agents go through it.  Even knowing this going in, it is still very difficult to accept when the slow times are upon us.  Good mentors certainly help in this area.

I am certain that I have learned more than 3 things during my real estate career, but the 3 that stick out the most are staying in touch with clients, being a good listener and always put the clients best interest first.  Staying in touch with clients, past clients, potential clients, etc. is vital for a successful real estate career.  I have always been a good listener, so this part of things came easy to me, but I have learned over the years how important it is to be a good listener when a client is telling you what they want.  Some agents get caught up in what is in it for them, but in my experience, that is not how to have a successful real estate career.  I feel that if the clients best interests are always put first, success will certainly follow for us as individuals.

In participating in this contest, it reminded me that I have yet to update my photo for 2018, haha.  Now I will embark on updating my profiles for 2018!

Hi Brian

Great advice for newbies! I also think mentoring is so important when starting out, but along the way can be a huge help, too. And the roller coaster analogy works so well for our business!

Brian, thank you for sharing your insights. I think most of us didn't really know what we got ourselves into when we first started in real estate.

Morning Brian.

Yes sir, when I started I was told you "list to exist", shown my cubicle and that was just about it.  If only I had a mentor back then...

Great advice, Brian England .  And, you're right... there's no replacing getting out and doing it!  You can read and study but getting in the trenches is the only way to internalize, learn and grow.  It's a process.

Hi Brian England Thanks for the comments...especially the one abut the roller coaster.

I agree that there are ups and downs.  Income is like an ocean in motion...many times there is not a lot of action...sometimes there is a ton of action and sometimes it is in between.  The key is finding the financial balance to get through the lows and the highs.

I am going to share your blog with my new agent, Lindsey Haden who just received her active Nebraska real estate license a few weeks ago and also has just joined AR.

I hope she starts blogging soon as she is a very smart young lady. I know she has a lot to share once she starts writing.

If you have spare time, please send Lindsey a message of encouragement...I believe she is one of the future leaders of the industry in central Nebraska...but she has to get through the early days...and months...and years!!

Have a great day!

Good afternoon James Dray , wow, so you really did learn it all by experience.  It would have been good for you to have a mentor.
