I love being a realtor! Trust me, this career is not easy, but it is fascinating. It really has it's ups and downs, but hey I am never bored.
My father was a leading broker in this area for many years. He is now 81 and recently renewed his license to "dabble". I guess real estate is in my blood.
There are so many aspects to this wonderful career. People skills, advertising, contract knowledge, counseling, advising, showing homes, marketing, the list goes on and on. The best part for me is building relationships founded on trust and respect. All of this around the excitement of home ownership is just downright satisfying.
I do realize there are two basic reasons people sell and buy real estate : pain and pleasure. Many folks are upgrading, some are downsizing and all have a buzz of excitement. Some are divorcing, and some are dealing with the challeneges of being empty nesters. In many cases there is a fair amount of emotional issues and stressers that arise. I feel like I was born to deal with people who are in transistion.
I think it is key to deal with all of the professional aspects of the procsess, and key in on the personal side of it was well. Moving is TOUGH. I have told several people NOT to move! Case in point: I was contacted by a women in her 50's who inherited her mothers home. It needed alot of work but is in a very desireable area. I was the second agent she spoke with. She also owns a condo in the area she thought she would either sell or move into. There were 3 potential deals for me. Show her a different home, and sell her mothers and her condo (which agent #1 suggested and took her around looking at homes).
As I listened to her intently, I asked her: what do you really want to do? She said she wanted to fix up her mothers place and stay there, and rent out the condo. I confirmed to her this was a very wise idea for her in many ways -in the long run. I confirmed that fixing up her mothers home would be a delightful choice for her, and that is was indeed a GREAT location for her in many ways. I told her, don't move umless you have to!
I drove by the other day and saw the workmen making all of the changes we discussed, and had a great feeling that she did the right thing. As for the 3 deals I could have "advised" her to do...well no amount of commission is worth giving someone advice that only benefits you.
There's no place like Home...
