Ferdinand Jakob was born in Steyr, Upper Austria back in 1809 the son of an ironmonger. He attended the Polytechnikum in Vienna graduating in 1829. After graduation, he stayed as an assistant to Johann Arzberger.
In 1835, he became a professor at the Hohere Industrieschule in Zurich where he taught mathematics and geometry.
In 1841, he was a professor in mechanics and mechanical engineering at the Polytechnikum Karlsruhe and its director from 1857 to 1862. He died the following year in Karlsruhe.
