You see them everwhere...

"We'll buy your house for cash!"

"Amazing New Face Cream that will take years off of your life"

"Get 100 T-shirts for $10.00. Limited time offer."

These small cardboard signs sit on a little wire frame and are used by countless numbers of people and professions. Realtors use them for open houses as they are much easier to put up and take down with regards to weight and portability. Only 1 small issue.

Cities, Counties and Towns have waged an all out war on these bandit signs. They have employees who drive around with their hazards on and pick up and discard of all of these signs. What happened to free commerce? If we as Realtors have an open house, in our minds those signs will only be up for a few hours and then will be removed. WE are not like everyone else, right?

I was driving home through a suburb of Orlando the other day. This is a neighborhood that is famous for picking up every sign they see. I had to laugh because the Homeowners Association had these signs all over the neighborhood telling all of the residents about an upcoming meeting. I actually thought it would be funny to pick them up and discard them (If it weren't for the fear of being arrested...)

These signs are a communication device. I agree that some of them are obnoxious but so were the political signs. During our Primary, I would see about 50 signs all lined up on corner after corner. OK, we get it!

If there could be some compromise when it comes to allowing these signs during certain hours of a day, it would be a great relief.

One thing I forgot to add. We often joke about someone being a Gladys Kravitz. For those of you too young to remember, Gladys Kravitz was the nosy neighbor of Samantha and Darren Stevens on the TV show Bewitched. Her husband's name was Abner and she would always be looking out the window watching what was going on in the neighborhood. When anyone in my family gets nosy, we call them Gladys. I remembered this because this is what some of the HOA members are like when it comes to Bandit Signs.

You are absolutely correct!  I've had many open houses where the president of the hoa would come by to inform me I was "breaking the rules" by sitting a nice sign out for 2 hours.  I always ask what they would do & how they would feel if it were their house for sale.

Tina, My favorite thing in your whole comment was that it was a "Nice Sign". That is funny. Of course, the HOA person didn't think so.

I hate signs... except open house signs.  WE don't have a lot of areas here that they do take down signs.

I still lose signs.  I am down to two signs. Gotta order more.

Jim-

ORRA (our local board) has been working on this issue since last year.  The Sign Ordinance Task Force at ORRA has approached all of our local counties and some cities about illegal temporary signage.  There are actually 2 itemporary sign ssues:  illegal/bandit signs and legal, directional signs (some of which are actually illegal, temporary, non-directional).  The bandit signs will be swiped.  The "directional" signs (such as Open House signs and really any sign with an arrow are still under negotiation with most of our localities.  We are trying to get all localities to approve a similar directional sign ordinance, allowing directional signs from sundown Friday until sunup on Monday.  As you can imagine, not all the counties/cities are going for it but at leat ORRA is trying to be proactive.

Does anyone actually read the political signs, or is someone wasting an awful lot of money?

Maureen - Hate is such a strong word. These signs have never done anything to you. Give them a chance and they will repay you in spades! :)

Lisa - I think the key here is that all of the counties and towns are not on board. Agents know which neighborhoods are a problem and usually work around it. To us, they can be unreasonable.

Penny - I agree. But when you look at a campaign that spends millions of dollars to get elected and then there's the $600 toilet seat..oh my.

Hello Jim: Glad I don't have to deal with any HOA's. My market area is rural and not developed enough for that sort of thing, but to me it sound more like the HOA is the Bandit, stealing the signs. At least let the owners come and reclaim the signs if they have broken the rules.

I agree Mary. They used to let you come down to pick up your signs but now I think they just destroy them.

they spoil the landscape...

you can not see the important signs (real estate open house)  for the poliitical signs, "we buy houses"signs, "hot tub 4 sale" sale , "pillowtop mattress for sale" signs, "going out of business" signs.... etc

I had never heard them called bandit signs.  Did you see Chris Elizabeth Griffith's AR poll on signs?  Interesting.  I had never thought about it.

Bandit signs....nice name for them.  I have not heard that term before, but I like it.

Bandit comes from the Latin combining

Ban - To get rid of or eliminate

and

Dit - I dit what you told me and I still can't sell the house!

I have no idea where the term bandit comes from but thought the Latin is always a good bet!

Signs, Signs, everywhere a sign.

I live in an area with the strongest sign laws I have ever seen, you cannot find anything. Great for us as we are also have a large number of relos, they can't find a home without us.

But I do DISLIKE all those signs, drives me crazy when I go back to Michigan and every light post has a  "make $8000 a month working from home" sign on it. Hows that working?

Clean is nice.

Hey at least you guys don't have our issue!

Realtors are prohibited from putting up directionals on corners in almost all local areas here.  However, guess what?!  If you are an FSBO, it's okay!  They seldom remove them.  Agents have fines levied against them and if you're an FSBO, it's alright.  Love it.  Folks paying for marketing and representation are forbidden to erect their directionals however those ugly signs by owner linger for months and no one says a word.

The political signs that irk me are the ones left in place long after the election has occurred. Before an election I suppose they can be considered informative, but after the fact they are clutter.

I actually put up these signs for builders and apartments in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I put them up after 5pm Fridays and take them down Sunday night. http://weekenddirectionalsigns.com/ServicesArea.html  or https://www.pennjerseysigns.com/Sample_Sign_Layouts.html shows some sample sign layouts.
