The Last Half of a Two-Day Trip to Honolulu

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

Island fever is a phrase people use to describe how bored they are, but I honestly cannot see how a person could be bored on Big Island. In my opinion, it's the best of all the Hawaiian islands. It offers such a wide variety of climates, geography, plants, animals and the people are so friendly. You can paddle board in the morning and be in the snow by the afternoon.

Some of my neighbors have never been to another Hawaii island, other than changing planes in Honolulu. I don't know how you choose to buy a vacation home on the Big Island if you haven't spent time on the other islands.

The island talks to you, I guess, or it doesn't. Big Island talks to me. I wish she would speak louder to my husband. He comes to Big Island because I'm so often here. Well, my idea to curb so-called island fever for my husband was to take him to Oahu. You can read more in my personal blog today and see all of the photographs of our second day in Honolulu at this link: Tips to Visit Pearl Harbor and Michel's at the Colony Surf.

HI Elizabeth....I've never been to Michel's but it gets really good reviews.  Another great place to visit on Oahu is Shangri La (the home of the late Doris Duke).  Tickets are sold through the Honolulu Museum and the tour is led by very knowledgeable docents.  Enjoy your stay.

The big island is my favorite, as well, Elizabeth. Did I ever mention to you that three of our four grandkids were born in Hawaii? One of my best friends, who was a Hawaiian native, moved to California to go to UCLA and then didn't return to live there until more than 30 years later. She lasted about two years on Kauai... and then island fever drove her back to the NYC area. She had island fever bigtime... maybe it's different living there full time versus just visiting a lot. And I totally understand the idea of island fever, I had it in Abu Dhabi... not an island, just a desert... but same idea... far from everything... you just see endless sand instead of endless water. (And truly nothing to do there.)

Jack Tenold Way back in my mind somewhere I think I heard of that museum collection but I can't recall where. Thanks for telling me about this. Surely I will make more trips to Honolulu and I would like to see Shangri La. I just googled it. Wow.

Nina Hollander Well, I don't think I would like to look at endless sand, either. But not having been to Abu Dhabi or any place really with a desert of just sand, I don't know how I would react. I used to think, for example, that Death Valley had nothing there until I saw it through the eyes of an older woman. Now I love Death Valley.

As for endless waters in the sea, that's not my experience in Hawaii. There is a horizon where the sea meets the sky, but it's not into infinity, LOL. I hear from residents here that the island does not speak to everybody. It speaks to me, though.

I've done the wadi bashing in the Gulf desert. It was a good experience... once. No need to rinse and repeat. And looking at it for 22 months felt like 22 long years.

I had to google wadi bashing, LOL. Yes, it looks like it would be fun. Once.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents I don't think June would work, still too busy here.  Have a trip planned first of August, and will be 11 days.   Maybe December when you go again?

Perfect photo of you at Michel's, Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents . Although it's tempting to go back to one's most favorite places like Michel's, we'll have to dig deep to see what we do next New Year's! The first step was to add an additional day!

I never could understand the whole "island fever" thing, and I've spent quite a bit of time on the islands.  However, that being said, if I were to live in the islands, it would be on the Big Island.  It's larger, has a diverse array of environments, and places to go and see.  I love Kona!
