When someone asks you how business is going, what do you say?
"I'm SO busy!"? Careful.
This automated response may create the perception that you are so busy you couldn't possibly want, need, or be able to handle more business. You must have your hands completely full and can't possibly take on a single other client right now. Right? Usually this is not accurate.
Most real estate agents do stay very busy. Successful agents admit that by 'busy,' this means they are working a solid day including tasks such as marketing themselves, promoting current listings for sale, fielding new leads, nurturing old leads, email follow-up, social media monitoring and updating, keeping content current on their hubs, and numerous other aspects along these lines to try to promote themselves and create more business and nurture their existing business. If you're anything like me, sometimes the biggest challenge in the day is to turn OFF work at the end of the day.
If the average REALTOR® is working so hard to try to capture more business, why do they typically respond in such a way that perceives they're not able to handle any new business? Those agents have plenty of time to tell you just how busy they are. This can unfortunately lead to the perception that they're so busy...TOO busy to handle any new business or referrals! I have witnessed lost potential business and referrals firsthand just by overhearing this automated simple response of "I'm so busy" from agents.
The next time someone asks you how business is going and you are working hard to try to capture new business, reply with something along the lines of "I am fortunate to be thriving in a changing economy (if you are), but I can always use more business!" End this statement with an open-ended question asking for their business or referrals. If you don't ask others for business, you'll likely get what you asked for. Nothing.
