It seems like there has been alot of talk about link building lately… maybe it’s just me, but most SEO’s know that quality link building is a pretty important part of offsite optimization.

So, I thought I’d share something that has helped me quite a bit. There is a great seo link building tool put out by SoloSEO (of which I’m a happy customer). It was built a while back based on a post by my hero: Rand Fishkin.

I highly suggest you try it out if you are looking for some link building help. I’ll also post some of the queries that it uses here for your reference. Just take any of these examples to Google, and it should really help you to find some good quality links.

Thanks again SoloSEO for a great tool!!!

Hi Rob,

No, these are sample searches you could put into Google to help you find websites to get links from. Nothing to be changed onsite. Just suggestions to help you find links.

I am with the commenters that do not understand what is being offered by soloseo. Maybe it just take some trial and error to understand exactly what it is supposed to do. I will work through it. Maybe it will make sense to me soon, and I can report back.

Thanks, it all adds up and helps us understand SEO.

Thanks for the information.

This pulls up a good number of link sources. What is the deal about link farms having negative impacts for ranking? How can these link sites be evaluated?

Richard

Susan and some others,

If you are still having difficulty, I understand. It did not make sense to me either.

But as Justin explained in his response to Rob:

these are sample searches you could put into Google to help you find websites to get links from. Nothing to be changed onsite. Just suggestions to help you find links."

So, I tried this and it pulls up link sites.

Go to google search (or I suppose other search engines). Type in your key word (for me, say I type in mortgage), then write additionally "add URL".

So in the google search, I type "mortgage add url".

The search brings up a websites that will link to your website to give back links.

The SEO website only gives suggestions that you should add to your keyword inorder to run the search for link sites, rather than for actual mortgage sites.

Anyway, I think this is right.

Hey Richard,

Thanks for that. That is exactly right.

With link farms and large directories, you just want to be careful. Take a look at the sites that are being linked to... if they are poor quality, you'll want to use caution. Also if the page your link will appear on has more than 100 links, there is a good chance your link won't even count.

hope that helps...

That sounds like a very interesting idea. It seems like to stand out in this market you have to have a niche. Like the site I have been using called PropertyMaps. This site has a google maps/mls tool. I know others have functions that do different things also. Good luck with the changes - I'll be excited to check it all out.

I'm so confused! LOL OK, so I went into Google, entered my keyword and "add url" and I get a bunch of websites and a fair number of them are for information about other agents.

Now what? How and what am I linking to my site?

Justin - This is some great info. I have a couple quick questions.

A lot of sites that I pull up with the link building tool require a reciprocal link in order to add your link. Is it worth it? A lot has been written lately that reciprocal links are not that helpful. What is your take on this? I have a Wordpress Blog. If I were to add these links to my blog, where would you suggest putting them? In the sidebar? Or should I great a page just for links?

Also, when I do add alink to my blog on these sites should it be to my home page or to a specific post?

Thanks.

-Al

Hey Al,

Reciprocal linking isn't bad in and of itself. It can actually help build links and authority to your site, but you just don't want to do it excessively. When I'm buliding a link profile I try to keep my reciprocal links under 20% of my total.

With a blog, you have to be careful. You don't want to be adding any of those links into your footer or sidebar as they will appear on every page of your site... not good. Go ahead and create a seperate page and link to it from your sidebar or footer. That way, people can get to it from within one click of your home page so there is still some value there, but it won't get in the way.

Hope that helps!

Justin,

That is a huge help. One more question.

I have a blog (which is new) and a website (which is not new). My website ranks highly for almost all of my keywords but my blog does not (at least not yet).

Can you provide any advice for bloggers (like me) that have two sites/blogs regarding a strategy for linking back and forth between the two sites that will help the newer site's SEO - without hurting the older site? How much linking back and forth should I do between the sites and how should I do it?

-Thanks.
