How Comments in the Rain Turn Into Blogs

Do you ever find yourself commenting when you could go one step further and blog? This happened to me this Sunday morning in Santa Fe. I was troubled by a suggestion to remove inactive Activerain members as a solution to improve what we do here in the rain. Numbers are important for one's blood pressure and frankly not as an indicator of Activerain's value to it members.  What happens when we see ActiveRain as something like a flower?

ActiveRainIsLikeAFlower_EmilyMedvecBlog

Like you, I know there are times when I have not stopped to smell the flowers in my path or even in my own garden. In those moments, I was probably not in the present. I had wandered into overwhelm and focused on was focused on something like a worry or family problem or client issue I could to control or even solve. When that happened I missed an opportunity to be present in my actual experience. In my book, missing to stop and admire a flower is missing a gift and often an opportunity. And in Santa Fe, flowers are not an everyday occurence along our dirt roads.

Now, getting back to being in the rain. There have been times in my life when I have not been as solid and regular contributing a member as I intended to be. Although LIFE is an old magazine now, LIFE does happen to all of us as do the demands of our real estate practice and related businesses. I confess, over my many years here, I have missed many Activerain gifts by not participating. Sometimes after reading a blog, I will pick up the phone to connect to another rainer to help out when my time is limited. This activity is not tracked in our "point" system. And for many rainers I know, the "point" system is not why they comment or blog or even join this community. However, they can speak for themselves here.

For me, Activerain members have always been my online office and connection to new knowledge, support and fresh ideas and opinions. When I have lapsed and not logged in to smell the flowers and benfit from all gifts of knowledge and insight, I have missed opportunities. In the past, when that has happened, I will often get a call from a member to see if I am ok or need help.

Today, I am ever so grateful that AR has never limited membership based on participation. It is my belief this is a community where we choose to participate in any way we can as members for our own reasons. In my experience, most of us are in the rain to learn, connect, educate others, help, grow our business, improve ourselves, build community and give support. It is a place to stop and smell the flowers, plant new seeds and build a garden of knowledge. Activerain is just the beginning of building what can be a lifelong friendship and business relationship in a diverse community focused on giving back the best way we can. Thank you for reading. I look forward to your take and comments.

Hi Emily,
Yes... that happens all the time to me! A comment turns into a blog post.   I was one of those who went AWOL for a few years due to personal circumstances and came back full force.   AR is a treasure for sure... for the benefits of blogging and for the connections.   I can still wish the membership numbers were more meaningful. My blog had more to do with those who signed up and got a few profile point, never to return.  The reality is there is no fair way to do it so it will never happen.   And, it is futile for one person to swim against the reality of the Pareto Principle.  LOL

Thank you Carol Williams for all you do here. Typically quality beats quantity. Remember, we live a world of mass distraction and consequently less social skills with too many people relying on a "like"button or emoji response. Stay patient. Keep blogging and reach out more to connect and engage. I have found Activerain works if you work it!

Hi Emily. I think your honest sharing might help change some perspectives and perceptions. I guess it would be really difficult to figure out if people are taking a break - or breaking away. Therefore, best to assume members will be back. ( As for the obvious spam members, they really do need to be cut)

Hmmm I totally forgot about "spam" members. Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD thank you for that suggestion. I trust the powers that be here in the rain may take that to heart. For me, the connections are more important and I am grateful for AR for giving me this opportunity.

The people that are here for the points certainly do make themselves known. The ones I like to interact with value the relationships.

Emily there are so many reasons people blog here in the rain! My main reason has never really changed much over the years - build relationships with awesome people and of course share information and business. I feel so blessed to have made so many friends over the years and continue to do so.  And you said it perfectly - it kind of is like an online office!

Emily indeed it happens more often than I care to say...when I disagree with a Post or a Comment that turns periodically into a Post with a Counter Position... there are many  reasons why we fade away from AR and return, I have many relationships I have built over the years and when one or two return it is "welcome back" nice to see you how have you been.... it is not just about the points... it is about the relationships....Endre

Yes, comments can definitely turn into blog posts!

I agree with you about not restricting usage of ActiveRain based on how frequently someone is posting/logging on. The spammer posters should be removed immediately, but it would be too difficult to figure out which of the other posters are still here reading and getting benefit.

Ahh, the points system. A book could be written about the coveted AR points! You and I are about even with our standing. I disappeared on at least two occasions. Burnout was the reason, that, and lack of time and response from other readers. I know 10 years ago a lot of us were told to "have an account on as many platforms as possible to get our names out there" so I suspect that's where the majority of non-participation comes from. Others left for various reasons. Those who contributed with their valuable posts should never be removed unless they violated some egregious guideline. Thanks for the conversation.

I have had a post inspired from another while commenting, many times. I LOVE when that happens. It's especially exciting when that post then inspires someone else to write their own post on the subject too!

As for the nonactive members...It's a tough thing to deal with if ActiveRain did choose to police it. I do remember many years ago when they said they were closing all accounts that didn't have activity in more than a year's time or something like that. Not sure whatever happened, but I know of at least one member who has never written a post (in many years) that still has a profile page. I don't care...just saying I don't think AR ever did what they said they were going to do.
