What I Learned By Tracking My Blog Topics for One Month

Have you ever tracked your blog topics?

As January came to an end, I decided to create a table listing my 42 Activerain posts for the month and categorizing them by topic.  I used an Excel spreadsheet to do this, thinking I might someday wish to sort them by topics with the mere click of a finger, or create a graph like the one you see here, using the Excel Chart Wizard.  You could track them in a table on MS Word, however, or even by hand in a notebook.

Reblogs (8) and original content (34) were tracked and categorized by topic.  Most of the re-blogs fell into the Q&A category (5), since there have been so many wonderful Q&A posts written for Bob Stewart's "Never Answer the Same Question Twice Challenge".  The other reblogs were Military (1) and Networking (2) posts. 

By the way, "networking" is the category I used for all posts written for Activerain members, my number one source for referrals.

 

The real wake-up call was this: Only ONE post for my #1 target market, relocating military families - and that was a re-blog of a video by my friend Cindy Jones in Northern Virginia.  I really dropped the ball in January, when it came to relocating military families!

I could probably argue that two of the local posts were military because they featured photos taken at the U.S. Naval Academy, but they weren't written to the specific needs of relocating home buyers or sellers. And no doubt the Local posts will be of interest to anyone relocating to the area and local residents, as well.

Another blown opportunity was the new listing I never blogged about.  Yikes!  I guess it's not too late to do that in February.

Activerain tracks our comments, clicks and views, and that data could probably be added to my chart.  Maybe next year... 

In 2011, I just want to have a system in place which encourages me to keep blog posts on target.  Tracking them like this will hold me accountable.
