LET GO TO GROW

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

There are a sizable number of businesses that fun very well as long as the owner is there.  What happens, however, when the owner takes a vacation?

If you are the owner have you ever felt like you can't take a vacation?  If this is the case with you here is the cause of the problem. You have so much going and and are experiencing business growth and you are afraid to leave because someone else might mess things up.  Your solution will lie in becoming a leader who trains and  develops your team and then empowers them by delegating with confidence.

It is important to have the right people doing the right jobs. Start by having job descriptions for everyone. Make sure that every staff member is qualified for the job. Find out each person's qualifications and whether they meet the requirements of the job. You may discover that you may need to hire some different people. You will need to focus on training and development to get your staff up to speed.

Next, look at every activity in your business as a process. What is the purpose of each activity? For example, we can start with the sales process.   I asked my business owner to tell me who was responsible for making the sales proposals. She told me that the responsibility was solely hers. By holding that authority, she is creating a roadblock for sustainability and growth. Many owners fear giving too much information to the staff for fear of having trade secrets given to competitors. Those who follow that advice will never grow past the level of business they can close themselves. Proposals are better done by the people closest to the sale.   You don’t need to share secret formulas with your staff but you should set up a procedure for pricing your products and services. Set up price lists for all products and services. Develop procedures for determining the price of each job. And then let the staff do the work. You will increase sales and increase customer satisfaction by empowering your employees.

Share business goals with your staff and help them develop their own goals. Their goals should support the overall goals of the business. Expect every staff member to take ownership and recognize them when they do. Give them responsibility and knowledge of performance measurements for their area of responsibility.

 Become successful

Remember that by properly delegating and giving authority to those closest to the work you will multiply the performance of your organization. With proper guidance you will delegate with confidence and this will build momentum. As momentum grows you then can enjoy and sustainable business that runs without your involvement in day to day details.  For a similar post on our website see CAN MY BUSINESS SURVIVE WHEN I AM NOT THERE?

Grant, this is excellent advice. Delegation is important and it has to be done to the right skill set or problems will occur. Putting time in to train employees is very important.

Great advice Grant!

I'm a one person show, so business shuts down when I go on vacation.

Great advice. It is important everyone is on the same page as to what's expected and also the daily processes required to keep things running. It's sad to see management or business owners fearful to delegate. Wonder what they are afraid of?

I find so many teams lack follow through from other members of the team. As for pricing, non real estate related, cars, drives me crazy that it takes so long to buy a car and they can never give you a straight price, they always have to disappear for 10 minutes or longer, then they still come back with aprice which you are not going to pay. They need a better system.

Debb and Bernie - being on the same page makes all the differnce in the world.

Nick and Trudy - of course in the case of the car salesman it could be an act.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

You remind me of my former coach - I had people working for me and they didn't really have any written job descrpitons. He had me assign them the task of putting together their job descrpitions and me doing the same...then meeting, discussing and formalizing each assistant's job duties individually. Then, we had to share them all with one another and highlight any over-lapping parts.

I can't say that it made a huge difference until we got to the overlapping part and that has been a Godsend! They love working together on those parts of their jobs and look forward to days that they do so.

Great advice, as always, Grant!

So true Grant Schneider back when I trained companies how to grow one of the first rules was executives had to take a week off and not have contact.  One, to ensure they grew their associates and two to ensure they were not doing anything "shady" in their positions (particularly in purchasing and accounting positions).

Yolanda - thank you.  Glad you like it.

Lisa - I was a firm believer in that.  Sometimes shady things come to light in those departments during an absence.

I think the takeaway is to hire the RIGHT people and then trust them to do the job you hired them to do. Don't micromanage or you will crush their spirit. Give them the freedom to blossom and grow, so YOU can focus on the other things you need to do, and can take that much needed vacation when it's time. Am I right?

Don Barrett
Integrity Real Estate Services - Idabel, OK

These can be difficult things to follow through on due to business owners usually being self-motivated people who could not stand to be "time clock puncher" but then they usually hire people that are content to work for others and sometmes that means they are not self motvated to follow through.  I can see that job descriptions for each one would be one part of overcoming this.  I can also see that laying out the expectations for each employee would be helpful too.  Great post.
