In Lieu of Durable Goods

By
Real Estate Agent

It was late last autumn while cleaning out my closets, that I made a conscious decision, to tell my kids that I wished for no durable goods for Christmas.  Only consumable goods that take up either no space, or temporary space, I begged.

Near the top of my wish list was a ticket to St. Mel’s Crab Feed, which occurs each year at this time.  It is one of my favorite events of the year.

My daughter Jill, who belongs to the St. Mel’s parish, gladly complied.  And, last evening 16 members of our party occupied a long table at the event!  They included family, and friends.

A Mardi Gras theme was provided, with a great New Orleans style live band and dancing.  There were several bottles of wine which graced our table, but one really stood out which I favored most.  It was the 2013 Hess Treo, an inexpensive wine at less than $20.00.  While white wine is usually preferred with fish and sea food, there was also a wonderful Italian Rigatoni with an amazing sauce that paired perfectly with this wine.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - I haven't visited Hess.  I guess I need to put it on my list of things to do.  In my younger years I drank mainly white wines; but for the past 10 years or so, I've really preferred reds, with almost everything.  Gamay Beaujolais, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon. . .The list goes on and on.

What a great photo. With the rays emanating from behind you, it almost appears as if you have either a halo or an aura. Either way, does this confirm you are the angel you be. cheers cvc

Myrl: That photo does look angelic! Curtis is right. How did you capture the light like that? And I love your Mardi Gras look. You know what we should do? We should go to lunch over by the train tracks in south Sac at that Italian Winery. Um, Frasinetti. I can do 2/28.

Myrl- Its an idea that we've been embracing! My cousins and I decided years ago to go with consumable Christmas gifts and love it. And one of my cousins decided that for Christmas they would go out to dinner with all of their friends rather than exchange gifts. I've been on a quest since the first of the year to edit and I'm loving it.

How fun!  I'm with you on getting gifts that are consumable.  Who needs more stuff?

Myrl,

Oh the thought of good pasta...my trainer has me on this diet...If she thinks I am going to eat like this for the rest of my life...I told her no way would I give up my wine on the weekends! Hess makes good wines at all levels!

Yolanda Cordova-Gilbert - I feel your pain.  I have been trying to stick to a diet since September.  However, my family is large, and there is the endless parade of weddings, birthdays, Christmas, etc., that keeps me from my goal.  And, then there was this crab feed, complete with pasta.

Sounds like a good time and a fun event. I like festivals and my family and I go to as many as we can. And I can completely understand wanting presents that don't take up space.

Myrl, what a marvelous gift! We do get to the point when we don't need "things" and experiences are better. We would do things like this for my MIL. She has a sweet tooth so one year we got her a cheesecake of the month subscription. She loved it. The funny thing is, my husband got it for her and she called me every month to let me know how much she loved it and how thoughtful it was.

Great mask Myrl and light effect!  Your Christmas gift helped you enjoy a great event with a group people you enjoy.  I remember when Trader Joes opened its first store in my area years ago, I made a few food baskets for holiday gifts. It was a fun way to shop for the holidays.

I agree about prefering gifts that can be consumed or experienced.  Who needs any more stuff at this point in our lives?
