How can we see the home with a 12 Foot Inflatable ball in the way?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Godzyk Real Estate Services NH License 033394

Who said showing homes is not fun? I took my buyers to see a home they wanted to buy. We walk in and there is a 12 foot inflatable beach ball in the Family room. The good thing is there was cathedral ceilings. The bad thing was we could barely get around it to get to the kitchen.

No matter how many times I tell my buyers to not dwell on what is in the home, but look at the home itself. They could not get over this giant Beach Ball. They had to touch it, their kid wanted to lay on it.

The home was a For Sale By Owner. The owner was actually home to let us in. Therefore I was unable to get any pictures to share. My buyers did not seem to like the home, they were too distracted to appreciate the home.

The moral of the story to home sellers, is that a home has to be presentable when showing it to buyers. This is not presentable. I have to admit i would love to be outside and be able to give it a good kick to see how high it goes. This is home selling 101. Not the beach. With no listing agent to inform the sellers of how to preprare the home for showings, it did not show well. It also may be why it has been for sale for so long. The seller told us everything and anything, enough to scare the buyer the rest of the way out of the home. I did think I would love to list the home and sell it the right way. I left my card with the seller.

Perhaps the MOST IMPORTANT message is to share with every consumer that my philosophy is simple, provide more personal and professional service to guide my clients through each step of the buying or selling process. All Agents are not created equal and every buyer or seller should take the time to hire the BEST not just the biggest. Those that hire me, find a dedication like no other.

And yes... come summer I am thinking i need one of those ball for my pool.

Hi Scott Godzyk - I can imagine that the conversation for the rest of your showings with your clients, always included a comment about that ball. YIKES!

They wondered what they will see next when we head out. They did say they were having fun buying. I guess that is better than being stressed out Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

Hi Scott,
Yes FSBOs can do themselves more harm than good, can't they?

Hey Scott another good story!  Those big balls are used to teach team work. I used to have one for kids way back when and they all loved the games I came up with. But.....in a living room?  Why I don't know!!

That is one big ball, maybe the seller doesn't really want to sell and this is his method to push buyers away.

Doesn't surprise me at all especially with a FSBO. Trying to sell a home yourself is much harder than people think regardless of this being a buyers market. No telling how many potential buyers were turned off by the giant inflatable ball in the family room since he probably didn't have the resources to get buyer feedback. Had he been represented by a pro we would've told him to put a nail in that ASAP

Sometimes there are minor distractions that people are just not able to get over, but then sometimes I guess there's a random 12 foot ball. Some days you have to love this business.

One of the down sides of being a FSBO, is not having guidance in how to present a home to its best advantage.

That's an extreme example, but getting a home show ready means showing the maximum space.  I viewed a listing the other day that had a furniture overload problem.  The family room was so junked up with huge pieces.  The home was perfect for my buyers, but they couldn't see beyond the furniture to figure it out.
