A few years ago I took my wife and son to Washington, D.C. for the Memorial Day weekend. We did the whole tourist routine around the D.C. area: Smithsonian, National Art Museum, The US Capitol Building, etc. As it turned dark on Saturday evening we had been in the crowd watching The National Memorial Day Concert from the steps of the Capitol. Many celebrities were there performing and we of course heard the National Symphony Orchestra play "The Stars and Stripes Forever". This was rousing and invigorating for a national holiday for sure.
After the concert we decided to walk back down the mall towards the war memorials. We took a stroll through the Korean War Memorial What a moving sight this was after dark. It is lit such that you feel you are right there with the soldiers on a night patrol. What an effect it had on me to think in the stillness of that moment how much others had sacrificed for me through the era of the 1900's. World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, The Gulf Confict, etc. What a price was paid for my freedom and for the freedom of others.
We live in the most wonderful country in the world and often take it for granted! I for one am really serious about focusing this Memorial Day on thanking those who have preserved our freedom. If you have friends, neighbors, relatives or co-workers that you know have served in our Armed Forces, take them time between now and the end of the month to show them not only thanks, but honor and respect. I realize that Memorial Day was designed to show thanks to those who died in our conflicts; however, but why not thank those still alive as well? They deserve it!

Steve, this is beautifully done. I had an uncle who served in Korea. He passed away before I was smart enough to ask him about it. The only story I ever heard was that he came home without letting his mom know ahead of time. He walked in while she was on a ladder hanging curtains. She fainted and fell off!
My husband's uncle also served. He doesn't like to talk about it but I understand that he was the sole survivor in his unit. Very sad.
