Dallas Blooms - A World of Flowers

(February 24 - April 8)

Everyone is anxious for spring (squirrels too!) and there is no better place to be in North Texas to welcome Dallas Blooms than at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens the weeks of February 24 through April 8, 2018. For additional information about the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens visit their website by clicking here.

The photos in my blog post were shot on location at the Dallas Arboretum in February, 2017. As a spring baby, I have been a flower lover since the day I was born. My grandmother took me into the gardens and we planted flowers when I was barely knee high. I remember her long white flowing hair glowing in the garden as I helped her plant flowers. On our knees we played in the dirt. She wore long dresses and I did too, for that was customary. For me, seeing spring in action is a sign of being reborn. Seeing is believing that out of a tiny little seed or bulb something beautiful arises. My grandmother taught me to be grounded. As a mother, I passed on this tradition to my children. And so, the legacy of the springs flowers passes down through generations.

My most treasured material gift was a camera on my 8th birthday. It was a gift from my godfather. I have been taking photographs ever since. There are times when I wish I had kept that camera for it brought me so much joy. Zooming in on flowers, plants, and things in nature has been a lifetime journey. It has taught me to focus on beauty. Today, I share with you the gift of joy, something I learned and has been rooted in me since the day I was born. I encourage everyone who has a home to plant a garden. Focus on joy.

Patricia Feager - I love your photo collage.  Purple is one of my favorite colors and the contrast with orange or yellow, just makes my heart sing.

Your grandmother certainly left you with cherished memories.

We just never know the full impact we may have on others.  Your godfather may not have realized when he gave you a camera as a gift that you would be taking photos from that day on.

The Gift of Joy ... such a blessing and wonderful gift to share.

Kathleen Daniels - Purple is also my favorite color. I remember the day my parents took me to the store to pick out my own winter coat. I must have been around 6, 7, 8, or 9 years old. That was a very important day for me, because with 2 older sisters, I always got their left-overs.

The place was called Robert Hall, a department store in Chicago. My siblings had to stay home by themselves. I got to touch and feel all the colors of the rainbow on that coat rack. Winter was coming, and as always, it was going to be another cold winter in Chicago. I picked out the only purple coat they had with a hood and white fur trim. My mother told me to try it on and it was  roomy but mom said, you'll be wearing layers. It looks perfect on you! My father said I looked just like a purple Eskimo and I remember smiling back at him. They bought me that coat and I loved wearing it.

You know Kathleen, cherished memories last a lifetime. Yes! I wish I had kept my first camera, but as luck would have it, he bought me more cameras and transistor radios for a long, long time. Those were happy days too!

I still love flowers, the color purple, music, and photography. They represent the blending of my life story. I'm glad to share this with you today and give to you the gift of joy!

Hi Patricia Feager - Flowers are a sure sign that spring is almost here. Our bulbs have been in full bloom since mid-January. With all the warmer weather, the plants are confused!

You are fortunate to have an arboretum in Dallas.  We are without one here in Sacramento.  And, your flower collage is absolutely spectacular, Patricia.

Hi Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - Don't you love seeing bulbs burst into color in January. I remember the first January in my new house in Flower Mound, I was absolutely thrilled when I had crocus and tulips. It has been a longer winter than usual here in Flower Mound. The temperatures are either in the 80s or below 30 or 60ish. I think you're right, plants can get confused too!

Myrl Jeffcoat - Awe... thank you so much for appreciating my photographs and collage. I try to arrange my collage as carefully as a bouquet of flowers. Also, thank you for featuring me in the Photos Group! What an honor! Thank you for the joy!

As far as being lucky, I do consider myself very lucky to have two choices: 1) Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens; 2) Fort Worth Botanical Gardens/Japanese Gardens. I wish every major city had one for residents and visitors. There's just something so special about spending a day at the Gardens. They always give me hope and happiness.

Patricia I have had enough of the gloomy gray of Winter, and I am ready to start seeing the beautiful Spring colors like those in your pictures.

George Souto - If I could send you flowers and brighten up the sky I would! Actually, today is cloudy and grey, gloomy too. Windy as well. When you really think about it George, there's a good reason why birds fly south for the winter and north when summer's near. In the perfect world, I would have 2 homes, one in the south; one in the north living in each six months each.
