So what came first? The Chicken or the Egg? who is right...

So what came first? The chicken or the egg? On behalf of those who believe the chicken came first we wonder where did the chicken come from?

www.endrebarath.com

There has been an ongoing debate not just on Active Rain, but all over the Internet, how many words do you need to write to get the benefit of Search Engine Optimization? There are two schools of thought one group believes in the 3000 words or more and then there is the other group that believes in 600 words or less.

So where do you fit in? This is nothing new, but an old question almost like the one : what came first the chicken or the egg???

I prescribe to the group that believes that today’s readers attention span is short. Twitter’s success is living proof of the short attention span of the clear majority of the readers. I know I am going against the “gurus”, but outside of Twitter I can just sight many Active Rain blog posts. I have written long and short posts and the comments I have received from members on this platform confirmed that they skimmed my post and not truly read each sentence and each word. Not trying to be tricky but I intentionally hid some twists in my post that sort of kind of contradicted my Blog Headline, and the readers who responded sent me clear messages as to who actually read my post and who only read the headline and the first paragraph.

So, with that said, I do not believe in the 3000-word blog posts. I do understand that too little text has its downfall. A webpage generally needs a minimum of 300 words for SEO purposes. Just ask the Active Rain people who know what they are talking about. Search engine optimization need certain key word to be found and they need to be incorporated into a smooth easy to read post, but it has to be long enough for the robots to find your content and index it.

So, with that said my advice is to concentrate purely on the quality of your writing i.e.: your words, not the quantity.  Do not worry about your word count. Worry about making your words count.

Anyway, I am not an SEO Guru, just a successful Beverly Hills Realtor who makes his living by selling real estate and my clients come from the World Wide Web!

My point is to share an other point of view! Not just what the Gurus want you to believe. Tell me honestly how many words do you write that bring business for you???

I would only read a 6000 word post if it promised to reveal a definitive answer to the chicken/ egg question.   But who am I kidding, I would skip to the end to find out!

Hi Endre

I suspect the debate about post length will continue on, with varying opinions and preferences as we have seen for some time. I can get a bit wordy sometimes and have to get better at not doing that. That said, some longer posts get some pretty good activity, depending on the content.

I don't think I would ever write a 3000 word post.  I did write a few that were more than 1000 when I was chasing the SEO "how to" back in the day and I admit fully that post posts did and do still rank well.  But I am typical to 300 to 500 ish.  That's as much as people are going to read.

fyi...I read the whole post. LOL

I agree with you and Kathy Streib about shorter being better. I've had to write longer posts for contests here and it was torture. I prefer short and sweet. Quality over quantity.

I like your line:  Do not worry about your word count. Worry about making your words count.

Endre, you are successful because you stay within who you are. Your focus is on the consumer not the search engines.
