Washing dishes and the “Meaning of Life.”

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

I have heard stories of inspectors that have gotten themselves into hot-water because they turned the oven or dishwasher on, only to find out too late that the appliance was being used as a pantry or a bread box.  While this has never happened to me---I can see how it could.  I personally don't have a dishwasher because I can't really imagine giving up the three really nice drawers that occupy the space where the dishwasher is supposed to go.  Besides that, it always seemed like there was a kid or two around that needed a job.

When I was a general contractor, I found that doing the dishes was one of the few really relaxing (almost mindless) things I could find to do after a long hard day of "pounding nails" or corralling sub-contractors----sort of  like the "Zen-of-Doing-Dishes."

Sometimes the ways to un-wind in our lives can be built right into the process of life itself if we don't work too hard at buying into the Media's ideas of relaxation.  Does it really make any sense that one's sanity is dependent on whether we can afford the next Yoga class or Gym membership?

On a recent inspection I was reminded of why I always check inside the dishwasher before I turn it on.  I was so happy to see that someone else had also discovered----The Meaning of Life.

I think I will stick with the dishwasher for zen. I find my zen sitting on my back deck looking at the sunset over Lake Murray.

Good morning Charles, I think I am with Chip, I will find my zen relaxing on the back porch or reading a good book.

Charles - great pick.  I never use the dishwasher.  When ours broke, I never even replaced it for eight months, but my husband finally made me give in.  So I wash and when he cleans up, he uses the dishwasher.

Hi Charles,

I think I am going to consider moving in next door to you.  As a teenager, I washed dishes every night for 7 people.  It became a chore that I came to dislike very much.  And our dishwasher just passed away.  Time for a new dishwasher.  If you every pass through Columbia, SC and need a bit of ZEN, stop on by.  To paraphrase Barbara Mandrell (loosely)...you can wash dishes in my house anytime!

As for me, Chip is just a hop, skip and jump from me and Lake Murray is beautiful.  I like his kind of ZEN.  His deck sounds like a great place!

We wouldn't make it without the dishwasher- well my wife- I don't do dishes. I never even thought of people using their dishwasher for storage- I know lots of people with  second oven that use it as a bread box- but that was a first with the dishwasher. My zen does not include housework.

I'm so sorry to hear that Steven was right.  You have become delusional.  No dishwasher and likes to wash dishes....sad....sad...sad.

Barbara,

I feel so bad about any part I played in Charlie's descent into madness. I told my wife this morning that while Charlie is only "partways" at Active Rain this week, people are poking fun at him and it makes me very sad. Then I realized that I am probably the ring leader in making fun of him. I am so ashamed.

Well, Steve, you really do need to feel bad.  But I'll bet your wife agreed that a person who likes to wash dishes is delusional.

Since I seem to have been "universally" branded as delusional for my "Zen of Dish-washing" blog, I thought that since I have been "away" more than physically from playing in the rain, that I would do a blanket reply to all of you that were kind enough to feel sorry for me in my delusional state:)  So----thanks----now I have to go do some dishes:)

Hey Dad,  I have found myself with the dish washing affliction as well so I don't think that your delusional (at least not about the dish washing part anyway!).  So that's where I got that from... Does that mean I can blame you for all the strange looks I get cause I like washing dishes?
