If you have been hearing some discussions around the end of January this year, that Spring is arriving early in Los Angeles do not take it seriously. Keep in mind these are people trying to get attention or are not used to what Winter and Spring is like in Los Angeles. Having lived here for over 20+ years the only real issue I see is, that we are way below the average for rainfall than what we are accustomed to this time of year.
Just as an example in the past two weeks there has been a clear indication temperature wise, that winter is still here. I have been kidding around with people about the old saying “when Hell freezes over” interestingly we hit temperatures way to close to freezing at night. Keep in mind 39 degrees is not what our Mediterranean Climate is known for.
Here in Los Angeles aka LA we are used to having different temperatures, for example living near the beach as in El Segundo, Playa Del Rey, Marina Del Rey, Venice, Santa Monica and Malibu temperatures seldom reach over 75 degrees Fahrenheit. This is thanks to the coastal weather such as overcast and fog in the morning which generally breaks up in the early to late afternoon.
We look at Downtown Los Angeles aka DTLA as a bit warmer, just as we look at the San Fernando Valley as a warmer area. Meaning that there is more the likelihood, that temperatures will go about 10-15 degrees warmer than in the coastal areas.
If you are wondering, no we do not get snowfall or freezing temperatures. When we do get rain, it could be quite impressive. I recall the first year we relocated from Boston, MA there was an El Nino condition and there was so much rain, that it felt like driving through a car wash to go from point A to point B. Unfortunately, the downside was not only flooding, but mudslides that were quite dangerous.
Now if you like the climate I described and are considering relocating to the Greater Los Angeles area please reach out to me directly and in the meantime enjoy my photos that clearly look spring has arrived in our front yard. Much to my chagrin, the green is mostly weeds and not the green grass that I was hoping for. Keep in mind I am not complaining it beats the harsh climate others have around the country.
I am truly grateful where I live and for those who do not know we do have four seasons just that they are milder and more temperate.
