Going the distance 7.46 km Bloomsday Spokane
Entries are pouring in for one of Spokane's most popular events: Lilac Bloomsday Run. Race Number 42 is Sunday, May 6th.
Enjoying my status as a perennial (an ever diminishing number of runners who have participated in each and every Bloomsday) motivates me to continue taking part in Bloomsday. Last year there were 88 of us. Perennials are rewarded with a "special" T-shirt each year and now instead of reading "I've run them all" they read "I've run done them all". The organizers understand the demographics of this group. My estimate is the perennials range in age from over 42 to over 90.
Spokane Guilds' School and Neuromuscular Center is the 2018 official charity. This 57-year-old non-profit serves infants and toddlers impacted by developmental disabilities of all types and is a most worthy recipient. The money raised through a portion of the registration fee, race sponsors and donations help families pay for high-quality services provided by the school.
To learn more about participating, a good place to start is here: Bloomsdayrunblog.org. Serious to silly, professionals to novices, young and old are welcomed. Music is a big deal during the race and there are plenty of bands dotting the race path. They motivate and energize the runners and some slow down and listen, others clap, cheer & run faster and a few stop and boogey to the beat. (At this point, the race winners have already completed the course, earned their T-shirts, and are on their way to the awards ceremony.)
Volunteers needed! Hundreds of volunteers pitch in to help and without their aid the Lilac Bloomsday Run event would not occur. They make it happen. A few of the tasks these remarkable people take on include: start line, finish line, T-shirt Distribution, course monitors, registration, number distribution, water aid and more.
