Where's the Beep?
We had a mysterious "beep" going on in our home. It was not loud, very quiet. It would "beep, beep" twice and then about 5 minutes later, do it again. It wasn't loud enough to interrupt a conversation but those "beeps" that we hear from our electronic devices are SUPPOSED to be important, otherwise why does the manufacturer set it to "beep"? Sometimes it's pre-set with no way to turn it off and on some things we have choices.
I could not find that beep. But it finally stopped on it's own. (As an aside, many of you are not old enough to remember the commercials in 1984 "Where's the Beef?"... but that's what I thought of when I began to look for the "beep".)
I had checked every "beeping" thing we had when I was looking for it. The number of "beeping" items in our home was a little surprising, and I probably missed a few. I know I missed at least one, or I would have found what was beeping!
It was amazing the number of beeps that are pre-programmed into our home. We have become so accustomed to all of the beeping that we usually just ignore them. I began to think of all the "beeping" things we do have:
I started in the kitchen... The Coffee Pot, requires the cancel button and start button to start a pot of coffee. It beeps once for each button... Then when it finishes it beeps 5 times... Yes, I said FIVE! And it's loud.. so once would be sufficient. My coffeepot must have an either an insecurity problem or feelings of inferiority, to demand that much attention!
The Dishwasher beeps when you press buttons to change the cycle, beeps when you press the start button, and beeps again when it stops.
Usually we end up with 4 beeps to finish washing the dishes.
Yes, I said FOUR! :) It may have a bit of an insecurity problem or an inferiority problem but not quite the issue that the coffee pot does.
The Clothes Washer beeps when you start it and beeps when it finishes... only two beeps. Now that's more like it! It's personality is a little better to deal with on a daily basis!
You can kinda' ignore it, at least for awhile and it doesn't get too upset.
The Clothes Dryer is even better adjusted mentally. It only beeps once when finished, but then if you don't pay attention to it, it will beep again in a few minutes and continue to spin around with no heat.. it's "beep" sounds more like a "buzz", so it's got it's own thing going on!
That new Microwave, now... it's a totally different story. I still haven't figured out how to microwave a baked potato in it.. there's usually a potato button but not on this one. It beeps whenever it has a mind to..
Two Cell Phones in the house and we all know how those things go off at the most inconvenient time, like when you're sleeping. Beeps, twangs, music, alarms, alerts, BUT at least most of the time, I can turn a sound off after I google how to do it.
Those Computers, I don't even know how many we have right now, six I think... but they don't do much "beeping" they're pretty quiet, for most things, we have the sound turned off unless someone has a video or a game of some sort going.
Then there are those incessant smoke alarms with dead batteries! We catch them fairly quickly because they truly are never ending!
I have realized I do not really have enough free time available this morning to dwell on all the beeping things in our home.... I haven't even started to count the beeps coming out of Ipads,TVs, Doors, Security System, etc... and then we get into our cars and I swear that 4Runner beeps at me when I look at it wrong!
Some of our "beepers" (Which used to be a term applied to pagers... is it still? Does anyone these days carry a pager?) go off when we are supposed to have them turned off such as in church and meetings.. but there's usually someone's pocket that start singing one of the latest songs, which makes it easier to identify who didn't turn their phone off. Then there are those cases where there's a beep in a meeting and everyone checks their phone... Ha!
BUT I RAMBLE (and I Must get off of this "beeping" thing and go to work)... and it's time to bring this little "good morning" blog post to an end. Hope you've enjoyed my rambling... you've got your own stories about all of the beeping in our lives... everyone does!
