When Daylight Savings Time Goes On and On

Waterfront RI Homes Marketed by Ginny Gorman

Having Open Houses on the day that daylight savings time occurs brings a host of interesting issues.  Either the customers may miss the Open House due to sleep deprivation, show up early (put their clocks back instead of forward) or show up late as you are closing up the property.

This day was one with a stunning waterfront RI home that was so busy with people who wanted to buy it that the back up list is long!  Yet I was there for 1.5 hours after the open was suppose to end.  Everyone was messed up with the time change.  I even had the client milling around quietly listening to the feedback since I did not want to turn people away.  Back up offers are always important!

Maybe next year I do it on a Saturday the day before the time change...how about you?

Good morning Ginny. While it does not bother me, many take days to become oriented to the change. Enjoy your day!

Hello Ginny. I stopped doing open houses because I wasn't particularly good at them and I was robbed but I guess you learned Saturday maybe better next year.

Good morning Ginny Gorman ,

It would be good to be universal with Daylight Savings time. I did an open house on the day of the time change and deliberately made it from 2-4! I had 45-50 people resulting in 3 offers! I was thrilled..only stayed an extra 20 minutes but it was a fun open house!

I haven't heard the official word but I think we're locking down DST forever here. I don't mind hanging out longer on an open if the traffic is good and yours sounded like a huge success Ginny.

Hi Ginny- I'd never looked at the time difference that way. And Kevin J. May is right...I heard that Florida may go on DST permanently. I do wish that if we do, everyone else does as well. I'm confused enough as it is.

I do not like daylight saving. I wish it would never occur. They do not have daylight saving in Hawaii, you know. So when I go there at this time of year, instead of being two hours apart from California, I am 3 hours. Which means instead of working from 7 to 7, I work 10 to 10 (on California time).

There is just no good reason to continue this archaic practice of daylight saving. It's not like we don't have electricity.

I do try to avoid scheduling anything on the first day of daylight savings time that involves another party.  And if I do, I make sure the night before to call them and remind them of the time change.  Once caught a family vacuuming and cleaning when I showed up for a listing appointment.

I don't see any advantage to changing the time twice each year. We still have the same number of hours of daylight. Who cares if they're in the morning or the evening?

The only one who really gets upset over it at our house is my old horse. He likes "Spring Forward" because he gets his dinner (5 p.m.) earlier. He does NOT like "Fall Back" because dinner is an hour late. It takes him a few days to quit complaining about that.

Florida is on the brink of going to DST all year long.  The bill passed both houses of the Legislature.  It needs the Governor's signature, and an act of Congress, to take effect.

Hi Ginny

I had a similar thing happen with an open house a few years ago, although we were not mobbed as you were. It's certainly important to remind people about the change when there are appointments..but then if we stopped changing back to regular time it would no longer be an issue. It has come up every year here in California but never makes it to the voters.

I'm surprised we still do the whole clock change thing. I wish we could just keep it the same all year long.

Congratulations on all the offers and interest in the listing!

Hi Ginny Gorman. Congratulations on such a successful open house.

I'm not of fan of the time changes and also try to avoid scheduling much on them. It takes me a while to acclimate to the new time, too...
Thanks for  sharing,
Bruce

We should definitely do away with time changes. There doesn't seem to be any need for them anymore.

Hi Ginny.  We may be heading to year round daylight savings time in Florida.  We need congressional approval to make it take effect.
