Some of the Lake Norman neighborhoods with the most character and personality are not in subdivisions. If you are looking for a more eclectic lifestyle where life is a bit kinder and gentler, I encourage you to take a drive down McKendree Road.
Located off of Brawley School Rd just before you reach The Point, McKendree Road leads to numerous winding waterfront loops and lanes nestled in tall trees.
As you drive along these roads you will pass by the few remaining old mobile homes, many charming lake cottages and large custom homes all happily coexisting. Neighbors out walking or tending their gardens will wave as if you are old friends.
It is not uncommon to find unique older homes; some even have large kitchen gardens that hearken back to the days when this entire area was farmlands. I couldn't resist taking picture of this charming barn shaped home!
At the very end of the point of the McKendree Peninsula, Hager Creek is a public access area with boat ramps, docks and expansive daytime parking.
Today there are homes for sale in the McKendree area starting at $179,900 for a VERY modest ranch to a charming Cape Cod waterfront home with "breathtaking main channel sunset views" and your own sandy beach, floating dock and boatslip for $975,000.
And, straddling both McKendree Rd and Chuckwood Rd, is the large, brand new Crescent Community "The Farms" with about 48 custom homes currently for sale ranging in price from $523,000 - $1,250,000.
So, if your idea of a dream home is a Lake Norman retreat I encourage you to explore the many smaller peninsulas along the shores of Lake Norman like McKendree Road.
