Palos Verdes residents have a wonderful volunteer organization here on the Peninsula called Los Serenos de Point Vicente, which assists and supports the City of Rancho Palos Verdes for the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. This center features a museum which exhibits the natural and cultural history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. These wonderful docents and volunteers also provide tours, special events, workshops and classes which are open to the public.
The Los Serenos de Point Vicente docents were formed when the Point Vicente Interpretie Center was opened in 1984. This is also the Center’s vantage point where these volunteers count daily from December to April, the migrating Gray whales that head down to Baja.The original volunteer class selected the name “Los Serenos de Point Vicente” which means “Night Watchman of Point Vicente” to represent their group. Later the group obtained separate non-profit recognition as a formal 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Besides maintaining the duties at the Interpretive Center the docents lead the nature hikes that take place throughout the year. Some of the nature hikes that Los Serenos de Point Vicente volunteers will be leading this year are: Forrestal Nature Reserve, McBride Trail, Alta Vicente Reserve, Oceean Trails Reserve, PVIC/Vicente Bluff Reserve & Abalone Cove Shoreline Park.
