The first day of spring is March 20th and is known as the spring Equinox. The length of the day and night is nearly equal on the equinoxes as the Sun shines directly on the equator. This year there is a massive snowstorm forecasted to hit the northeast. It is like living in two worlds at once. As the daylight becomes longer people begin to feel the hope in the air! And yet there may still be aspects of winter prevalent in some areas. Nevertheless, the quote “hope springs eternal” comes to mind from the classic poem by Alexander Pope. It speaks to the common human trait of optimism.
The residential real estate market comes alive in the springtime and in most areas represents the traditional peak selling season. One reason for this is that many people plan to move over the summer months to minimize disruption in schedules. People with children rely heavily on the school calendar to time move decisions. Others are afforded with more vacation time in the summer months and thus use that available time off in order to navigate the logistics of a move.
In seasonal climates, the coming of physical spring is welcomed with fanfare and celebrations. Grass is green, flowers bloom and gardens burst forth with beauty and new live. Everything is fresh and the birds are singing. Spring daylight savings time provides more hours of sunshine during the evening. Outdoor activities and entertainment benefit from moving clocks forward. It provides for more hours of daylight to enjoy the sunlight. This benefits real estate sales as well because buyers can more readily view homes after work hours.
People who live in climates that experience winter weather have likely been cooped up inside over the long dark days. Thus they are ready to get outside and do things. All of this activity benefits the real estate market. Sellers are motivated to do the activities to prepare the home for marketing and sale. Buyers have put off their search for better days and they have arrived as there are more homes on the market to consider.
This idea of hope in a new life is central to making a move. Often people need to be able to visualize where they are going before they can leave behind where they have been. Hope in this new life is what creates the impetus for people to pursue the home buying and selling process. This is but one reason the professional real estate agent will always be in demand.
