How to Protect Your Privacy When Selling Your Home
Selling your home can be a source of stress and a cause for concern about your personal privacy. Since strangers will be touring your home, you may worry about your personal information being at risk. Protecting your personal information should be a top priority and there are some simple, easy things that you can do to protect your personal information.
1. Ask your REALTOR® to accompany potential buyers when they view your home. Some REALTORS® allow buyers to walk through the property unattended, on their own. If this is a concern, let your agent know in advance.
2. Remove your mail and financial information. Don’t leave mail on your desk or counter in plain sight. You don’t want to have your personal information made public or risk having someone steal your identity. Don’t forget to remove all of your checkbooks, bank statements, etc. and store them in a locked filing cabinet or lockbox.
3. Remove personal items like diplomas and photos to avoid providing potential buyers with any personal information about you or your family. It is also important to depersonalize your home when staging it so by removing these items you accomplish two things at once.
4. Do not leave your computer on during showings as a professional identity thief could access personal information stored on your computer. Take a moment to shut down your computer before buyers arrive.
Be proactive and follow these simple tips to secure your personal information and your privacy during the process of selling your home.
