Comfort Is Your Enemy - Monday Motivation

By

I've been reading a book by Jared James entitled Get Out of YOUR WAY! I came across the following words of wisdom this morning and was inspired to share with you.

Daisy in Book

Midway in the book, I came across the following text:

"But I truly believe that one of the greatest obstacles to a great life is having a good life."

The author went on to say, paraphrasing, that if we think we are "doing okay" or making "enough" money, we won't strive to do better or do our best.

We won't reach our peak potential if we are happy being "good enough".

If we are afraid to take risks, we won't TRY to do better.

We will be COMPLACENT right where we are.

We are happy with the STATUS QUO.

Comfort is our enemy.

We must STRIVE to do better, reach further, grow, stretch, study, and learn.

Are you happy having a "good" life, or would you rather have a "great" life?

Just a few thoughts from the book I'm reading.

Make it a great week!

Thank you for the post. It is so true!

I have not heard of this book, however, it sounds very similar to Good to Great.

James C. Collins

“Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.”

Loved this post, but in all fairness, I find nothing wrong with being comfortable in our own skin, in our own location in life and place... it is not always about reaching higher and higher...  I guess being a Beverly Hills Successful Realtor should make me give up my good quality of life just so I could earn more and die?.....Like why would anyone want to be President of the US and take all the abuse? just thinking out loud, Endre

Terri Woods - it's very similar, thanks for sharing the book reference. Now I wonder which came first! :) Regardless, the book(s) remind us to strive to do our best and not become complacent.

Endre Barath, Jr. - I completely agree that we should enjoy where we are and be happy regardless of our state. There is more to live than working all the time and striving for more, more, more! But on a personal level, I have food on the table, money in the bank, and I could be very comfortable with that and not work toward the next sale. The passage I read motivated me to try for the NEXT level and gave me the little push I needed to get back on track.

Myrl Jeffcoat - that one line was the "aha" moment for me in the book. It rang true.

I get the point, Pat... but on another level one can reach a stage in life when being comfortable is just fine.

Hi Pat Starnes, Brandon, MS, if I read this post twenty years ago, it would have a different meaning, today, I actually like where I am as far as work goes, however, there are other areas in my life where I have to push a little harder.

Hi Pat,
Being "comfortable" is rarely a good thing during a career.  I am thankful to be at a point in life I can accept comfortable due to my past efforts.  Isn't that what we all work for?

Carol Williams - that's the point of the book, to get out of your own way when it comes to being successful. Good is comfortable, there is food on the table and money in the bank, but if you want to do MORE and earn more or ACHIEVE more, you have to work at it. We all could use a little push to get to the next level, if that's where we want to go.
