In the 1950s we were all rich. Anybody (any American, that is) could afford to travel the world. Everything was cheap (for us) because we made everything, Our factories were humming, turning out goods that we sold to the world.
Then Europe, Japan, and Korea wanted into the game. They started making their own stuff and even sold some to us.
We lost markets. We lost jobs. Some factories had to close. We became poorer.
But we still made a few things and we didn’t realize the path we were on.
Then China woke up. They wanted into the game too. They could make things cheaper than anyone else, even cheaper than Korea.
And Walmart was happy to sell their products to us for less than anybody else could.
So we not only lost our factories, we also lost our stores. Main Street became a ghost town. We are really poorer.
And then along comes Donald J.Trump and he promised to Make America Great Again.
We loved it. We cheered him on.
But now he wants China to straighten up and fly right. But China has no intention of giving up it’s advantages.
China wants it all. They want their factories to hum while ours gather dust.
They are striking back at Trump by leveling tariffs on goods from states that supported Trump. They think he will cave like every president has done before.
But Trump is not like every other president. He is not a politician. He can’t be bought. And he has a backbone of steel (American steel).
We need to have a backbone as well. This is a battle worth winning.
Maybe when all is said and done we will be rich again.
MAGA.
Go Trump.
USA.
And a note to those Mid-western farmers: Think vertical markets, not just commodities. Come on, you have to be smart about this. Stop crying.
