Kentlands Historic Area
330 Firehouse Lane, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, MD
On my regular walks through the Kentlands community, I often wondered about the history of the interesting building at 330 Firehouse Lane. I thought that it was one of the original historic buildings in the community but noticed that it was not mentioned in articles that discussed the historical buildings. So, I decided to contact the architect that occupies the ground floor to ask about the history.
Mike Watkins of Michael Watkins Architect, LLC responded immediately. He explained that the lot was conveyed to him by Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zybeck, the Miami based architects and planners that were retained by the developers in 1988. Mike opened an office for them at 320 Firehouse Lane. The developer’s fee to the architects included the lots at 320 and 330 Firehouse Lane. Subsequently, one of the lots was conveyed to Mike.
Mike Watkins designed the building in which his office is now located and moved in, upstairs, in 1999. Three other tenants occupied the ground floor before Mike started his own firm in 2007.
