Life and the journey, it has taken me in so many directions.  Children used to be asked all the time what they wanted to be when they "grew up" and the typical Policeman, Fireman, Astronaut, Nurse,Teacher, Doctor, and  Airline Stewartess were the popular professions back in the late 50's early 60's.

Follow your dreams

When I was young one of my teachers told me to "never stop dreaming the impossible dream," always go for what you want, and  to believe in yourself. "  That was what she wrote on one of my papers, and I've never forgotten it.

That comment would come back to me so many times over the years.  You know how it is ....life doesn't always turn out the way we planned it. We couldn't control our destiny when we were younger, no matter how hard we tried.

I wanted to be a Writer, an Astronaut, and a Lawyer.  Those were my dreams when I was in the 7th grade.  I thought for sure that I would be zooming to the moon, arguing a case like Perry Mason, or writing children stories that would win a Newberry or Caldacott Medal.

Well, life moved in the direction of my destiny ......nothing turned out as I dreamed. I didn't follow any of the dreams I had, and  it wasn't until after my youngest turned 18 that I thought again of the things I had wanted to do. I was too old to be an Astronaut, and didn't want to go back to school to be a lawyer.....but I did join the Peace Corps.....and I have been thinking about writing my childrens book.  It's never too late to follow your dreams.

We might have to rearrange a few things, modify some of our dreams, but if we want something bad enough.....go for it.  You just never know what might happen....those dreams  might come true :)

I always believe that we can do anything we put our minds to, just that some of us are in different situations and we have to rearrange what to do and figure out our roadmap to our dreams

Absolutely great post.  You will always have the chane to follow your dreams if you make that choice.  My wife is 50 (boy will I be in trouble for telling) and she will finish her Masters Degree to be able to be a Private School Administrator.  I know for a fact that if you want to be an astronaut that with a great deal of money, there is a guy taking normal people into space.  Being a lawyer is just a couple more years of school and a big test.  Your song is out there on the internet and it tells of dreaming the impossible dream.  It was played at my high school graduation.  Good luck following what dreams you will persue.  Also read Dr. Seuss's book "Oh, the places you will go".

Good Morning Kathy, Well another great post. It is remarkable how we turned out ,isn't it. Replacing one dream for a new reality that was more an opportunity than a dream. Dreams are an end without a plan, that is all that is missing. I asked a friend why he never became the architect" that he said he wanted to be. He replied that at 40, it would take 4 years. I suggested that in 4 years he would look back and regret not going for it.The four years will pass whether he goes for it or not. We tend most often not to put the plans in place but instead replace it with reasoning that seems to justify and excuse our inactions.

A women that I know graduated with her Bachelors degree at 86.. Her husband had been pretty well off but she had never put the plan in place.  She passed away a couple years ago and as her legacy, she endowed the University with a room in building wing in her name. She referred to it as her "Hall of Dreams Fulfilled".

So Kathy, it is never too late. All that's missing is the plan.

Kathy -it's a very inspiring theme. Pursuing your dream is probably a wonderful feeling. Even having  adream is a great thing. I don't think I had a dream -I just did what "had to be done" at the time.

I wanted it all when I was younger. Funny though...with a disfunctional family and life I just wanted to be happy and content. Took a lot of work with that dream..... I do believe I'm pretty much there. (more work to STAY happy).

And look...I gotta nice friend too :)

Kathy,
Sometimes life gets in the way of our dreams and they must be postponed.  If you really want to write children's books, go for it.  As for me, I have a few more years before I can put in action a plan that's floating around in my brain.

05/24/2008 02:09 PM by Cynthia Tilghman, Realtor® Onslow County NC Home Specialist (Kingsbridge Realty, Inc)

Kathy, Very nice post.  It is true that sometimes life gets in the way of our dreams but we should never give up!

Kathy,

You might have to delete this but I wanted every women to love me:) I guess not everything can come true...actually I wanted to play pro baseball but because of to much playing around and injuries...it ain't gonna happen at 45...although I'm still in pretty good shape:)

I always wanted to be an Attorney... and if I couldn't be that then I wanted to be an actress.  Instead I'm a real estete broker and trainer. I'm happy with my life :)

Kathy, How fortunate you were to have a teacher like that.  I didn't follow my dream for a while but when I finally did, it changed my life.  Now I'm living it and feel so blessed!  Start those books, I am sure they would be terrific.

05/24/2008 07:00 PM by Carole Provenzale Owner, Feng Shui Long Island & New York (Feng Shui Long Island & New York City)

comment #1- Sounds like a good philosophy to me.  I like how you stated the roadmap to our dreams...nice :)

Wayne- Uh oh telling the wifes age on the Internet, yep you could be in trouble :) :)  I am going to find that book you suggested....haven't heard of it before, thank you.

William- lovely story....that is so neet that she fulfilled her dream.  And the legacy her husband arranged is such a tribute.....:)  Oh, and I gave up on those dreams....and they are replaced with others.....except for writing that kids book, that one I still have :)

Faina- Hello there.....ahh it isn't even fair to compare...your life, and the circumstances of the time weren't condusive to "what am I going to be when I grow up dreams"  ....free....I think that is what your dream was, and you did it .  I admire you greatly as you know......

Sally- Being Happy is one of the best dreams of childhood....we want Peter Pan and Pollyanna  lives....where everyone can be what they want to be, and everyone has a happy ending.....I would say you have gotten some of your dreams for sure...might have taken awhile, but hey whoever said life was fair, or easy for that matter :)  I would say having you as a friend is better than being an Astronaut....more down to earth, and probably a lot safer :)

Cynthia- I remember being where you are now...and as long at the dreams stay floating, like my writing, then I think we will never let them die.

05/24/2008 08:25 PM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

Roberta- Giving up....nope, but rearranging yes.  Dreams are like our jobs....we want things to be one way, and they're not necessarily that way.  But we go on every day trying to get things right for our clients :)  Never Stop Dreaming....that in itself will keep us young minded :)

Neal-Oh now we know why you have so many groups here....still looking for all that Love.... LOL :)  Well, from what I've seen of your popularity....you have a whole lot of loving here in the rain :)  Now as far as the ballplayer goes....little league coach I'd say.......modification of the ballplayer dream, but still in the same field....... LOL :)

Monika- When I saw you wanted to be an Attorney and know you're running for President of the Board....I'd say you kept some of the desires, and like the rest of us....modified them.  Being happy with our choices is what it's all about.

Carole- At least you did follow them.....sometimes we can't do what we wanted, we do what we have to.  But as you said, things changed, and now look....you have your destiny :)

Some dreams take a little longer to achieve than others.  Some dreams are simply the stepping stones to the great things in life that you simply could not have dreamed of.    I liked your post.

05/24/2008 08:59 PM by Sondra Meyer (United Country Brazos Valley Realty)

Kathy, even your name sounds as a best selling author! GO FOR IT!!
I strongly agree with you, likewise I had many dreams that I could not fullfilled. However, I still believe that is never too late to get to them... except that I wanted to be a ballerina... at age 32 doing it might be a little challenging...if you know what I mean!
One of my favorite quotes says, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change". by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer. Very powerful message here! God bless your dreams!

05/24/2008 09:25 PM by Carolina Zepeda - REALTOR® Houston Texas Real Estate - www.carolinazepeda.com (RE/MAX Realty Center)

Sondra- Stepping Stones.......I like that sentence a lot.  I just read it to my 2 grown daughters and they liked it too :)

Carolina- I like you...an Authors name...... LOL :)  I think a Ballerina might be one of those things that might have some limitations, but as long as you're not trying to be the Prima Ballerina....:) I've heard that quote before.....nice one.  Isn't it funny how dreams were then  versus now ?

Kathy, Life is a destination isn't it?  That's great that a teachers words have stayed with you.  It is so often the negative teaching that get ingrained in our mind.

I don't know that many of us said "I want to be a REALTOR" when I grow up.  I made a somewhat circular path getting here but I do love real estate sales.

05/24/2008 09:51 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Kathy.....what a great post.  I had a Dad who always told me I could do anything I wanted to do if I put my mind to it.  Thanks for sharing.

Kathy, life boggles us down and along the way we tend to forget us and our dreams. I have always encouraged my kids to follow theirs. Even if they took the unconventional approach. I want no regrets from them later in life. Besides it is their dream and not mine.

05/25/2008 08:24 AM by Missy Caulk-Ann Arbor- Realtor(R)- Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams-Ann Arbor)

Kathy, a wonderful post. You are right it is never to late to go after your dreams. I always lilke creating things and helping people.  I also love to write but I kept that hid for a very long time. Until someone helped me come out of my shell.

05/25/2008 10:14 AM by Marey Hoeppner- Kalamazoo, MI Virtually assisting you anywhere.. (Virtual Assist Expert)

Marchel- Yes...life is a destination.  I think most of us had someone in our life that said something, or did something that made such an impact that we have remembered it.  In my case it was a teacher, but it could be anyone.

Pam-That was a great thing they told us....I did learn later that sometimes that isn't exactly true :)  Did you follow all your dreams?

Missy-"Life boggles us down"......that is so true.  No regrets...oh how life would have been different if more of us were given permission to follow our dreams and live our lives without regret :)  That is a really good attitude you have with them :)

Marey- Isn't it great that someone helped you realize what it was you enjoyed doing?  But even better is that you now take the time to do it ......being a parent doesn't mean we have to lose ourselves :)

05/26/2008 12:53 AM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

Kathy - Amen. It's never too late to follow your passion. I just saw "The World's Fastest Indian" for the second time. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor. It's a true story of a man from New Zealand who followed his dream to set the world's speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats in the 1960s... a real feel good movie.

Tom- I haven't seen that movie but sounds like just the type I like :)  Thanks.....

That caused me to pause and reflect...I'd almost forgotten some of those dreams........not unlike yours.................writer/photographer for National Geographic Grades 5-9.........Lawyer....Grades 10 to 2nd year university..........after that?  Hmmm married and kids..........after that.......what can I do and look after my kids now that I was unmarried......?  REal Estate!.......20 years later.......my youngest is 16...........So now.........what do I want to do for the REST OF MY LIFE? Gee.....time to start dreaming again!

Kathy - Your last line is brilliant!  I wanted to be a Dentist, then a Professional Baseball Player, then a Rock Star, then a Professional Wrestler, now I just want to be Neal Bloom:-)  Hold on tight to those dreams ...

05/27/2008 12:10 PM by Jason Sardi, Pennsylvania Mortgage Broker (First Choice Equity Group Inc.)

Liz-wow, when I read National Geographic Photographer my soul drooled........mine was Arizona Highways.....I dreamed of being able to take pictures that wonderful :)  Anyway back to reality ....LOL :)

Yes, the rest of our lives.....what do we want to do?  I have been asking myself this question for months now....what is it I really want to do.  I have that vagabond feeling going pretty strong, and want to just pick up and go off on another  adventure......but as yet I don't know what it is :)  And you.....with all your talents....hmmm time to dream once again for sure :)

Jason- Even just seeing your name now I prepare for a laugh or some serious reflection.....this time it was the laugh :)  I like your dreams.....and anything can indeed come true...well, not sure if you can ever be Neal, at least not the "Real Deal Neal"....LOL :)

Hi Kathy,

I always think of, I think it's John Lennon's, that song that says 'life is what happens while you're busy making other plans'.
Similarly to you, I had many dreams when I was young. After University there was a triple homicide wherein the parents of my high school sweetheart were murdered and the murderer then killed himself. Due to that murder-suicide, I ended up getting back together with my high school sweetheart and having three sons with him. Not at all what I had planned....but like you said, things happen. My marriage ended many years ago, my sons are grown and gone, and now it's time for me to re-create my life. Perhaps I'l follow some of those old dreams now!

I'm looking forward to reading your first children's book to my grandchildren.   (((-:

Jo

Jo-Anne-It indeed sounds like life got in the way of your plans.  And it is even truer that now that the boys are grown, and you are older that you can make new goals.....new dreams.  My Dreams for today aren't the same as they were before, except for the writing one....and like I tell my kids I am not ready to die until I accomplish the 2 things I have left to do, and one of those is to have a real published children's book :) :)  I would love for you to see one in print and read it to the Grandkids :)

Thanks for that encouragement :)

Kathy:  What talents?  I can't think of any ....but I do have that 'wanderlust' too!  I want to pack up and do an around the world in 80 days...or 800.......oh the things that I would do!  (Lizzie Seus)..:-)

05/28/2008 12:18 AM by Liz Moras- Team Leader & Managing Broker Keller Williams Valley Realty (Serving Abbotsford, Chilliwack & Fraser Valley)

Liz- Talents...everything you enjoy doing....every hope and desire, every picture you want to take, and everything you want to write, wit and humor.  The talents that were given to you, or you found....hey call me if you go on the 80 day trip ....I would love to go.  I even have the perfect walking stick, although it's better to find one along the way :)

05/28/2008 10:13 AM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

Kathy great post.  I've been thinking about these things too lately and I think as I get older I've been becoming more of who I am thus becoming the dream.  Does that make sence?  Becoming the person I've dreamed of being - and sometimes I get an opportunity to do some of the things I've dreamed of doing.  Since I've got a lot of dreams to come true yet, I figure I'll be living for a long time in order to fulfill them all!

05/30/2008 06:37 AM by Lynchburg, Roanoke & Danville Area Nannette Saunders ASSOCIATE BROKER (Bradner, Farmer, Towler and Associates)

Nannette- You make perfect sense to me....we do become who we're supposed to be :)  I have found though that some of who I am is not what I thought for many years, and that's OK, cuz I'm better now :)  I have missed you...hope all is well.
