Buyers & Sellers of Real Estate need to beware of 'Posers'…
This post was inspired by ‘Synchronicity’, There were several simultaneous occurrences of events which appeared to be related, but they had no discernible connections noticeable to me.
First, I read a comment on Active Rain about military awards.
Then, I received an email blast from Berkshire Hathaway’s internal email service, where several agents were pre-warning about “Amy “who would call about buying a home in our market and sell a home in another part of the country. On the surface this would look like a good Real Estate opportunity, unfortunately she is just a creative scammer.
Shortly after it, I was sent a link to this month’s Vanity Fair Article about a woman who ….well never mind why don’t you read the article (Vanity Fair Article )
“Posers” aka. “Pretenders” according to the Dictionary of American Urban, they are described as people who claim to be someone else. We find them in Real Estate, we find them in our every day interactions and we need to be cautious.
Occasionally you hear a person bragging about having been in the military and that they have earned awards. They appear to sound like the real deal, until they run into someone who has been in the military and to that person it becomes clear, that this person is a “poser”.
Did you know that this is a Federal Crime? The Stolen Valor Act makes it a federal crime to fraudulently claim to be a recipient of certain military decorations or medals.
Just as claiming to be a REALTOR® and not being one you can potentially be charged for Trademark Infringement and the list goes on….
So with that said, I would encourage for Buyers & Sellers when they first meet a Real Estate practitioner to ask them to show two documents, if they claim to be a REALTOR®: (1) have them show you their National Association of Realtor Membership Card with their member name and number, (2) as well as their State’s Real Estate License with their name and number and expiration date.
The ones who are legitimate will have no problem showing you one or both ID Cards.
