Move to Florida from the Northeast?

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to live in Central Florida?  I’m sure many people are, especially after this past winter with record snow falls and long periods of record low temperatures.  We live in Central Florida and love the climate and lifestyle here.  But making a decision to move is a major life changing decision.

My family moved to Florida over 30 years ago. We fell in love with the State of Florida from our very first visit. The harsh winter weather is making many northerners think about moving out of state.  Florida has remained one of the top states for people relocating in from other states. Lately, we have been receiving many calls from people all around the country telling us they are considering relocating and making a move to Florida.  Of course, they have many questions about what to expect, and where to start?

How do you even start to plan for such a major move? When is the best time of the year to move?  Obviously this is a major decision, and one that requires a great detail of research and planning beforehand.  If you are considering moving to Florida, here are a few tips to ensure a smooth move and relocation:

Deciding where to relocate in Florida. Location will be your number one decision.   Do you have friends or family already living in Florida? Some areas of Florida are more congested than others with more traffic. Florida is a large state and very diverse each with their own flavor.

What climate changes to expect when living in Florida. Winters here in Florida for the most part, are very mild.  No winter coats or shoveling snow here.  Some nights can get chilly, but the warmer weather usually returns the next day.  On the other hand, some people need time to adjust to the changes in humidity and hotter summers.  We also have hurricanes to deal with and severe weather as well.  Year round temperatures are different for each region, so do some research beforehand on the year-round temperatures of the region you are considering.

Buying a Home in Florida -  Making a Real Estate Purchase - Make sure that you deal with a knowledgeable, trustworthy Licensed State of Florida Realtor who can guide you through the process and help you find the perfect home and lifestyle for you and your family.   A Realtor can not only help you with finding a home, but also will provide information about the area, market information, real estate prices, taxes, closing costs, and other expenses connected with your home buying purchase.  Your Realtor can also advise you about local shopping, restaurants, areas of interest, schools, etc.

Florida Schools:  Public, Private, Higher Education.  You can research schools in Florida by visiting the Florida Department of Education Florida Education Website

Financial Advantages of living in Florida. Here in Florida, we have no state income tax. Each county has separate real estate taxes. You can obtain more information about each County by visiting the County Property Appraisers website for the county you are moving to.  Florida Counties Map and Lists

Florida offers a variety of Lifestyles -  Do you want to live in a Golf Community? Near the Beach? Do you love water sports, boating, fishing, biking, walking, running   Or is living in a downtown urban setting more appealing to you? Close to shopping?  Cultural Events & Museums?  Is it important to be close to medical services, hospitals?  Do you need to be close to your employment? These are all considerations that will play a big part in your final decision.

Establishing residency in Florida - Now that you have decided to make the move to Florida, you will have to establish residency here.  Visit the Official State of Florida Website for a wealth of information and assistance. Doing business in Florida, Government offices, Licensing, Tags and Titles, Insurance,  are all covered in great detail on the website.
