Will You Sell Your Email Address For $10?

Pictured above is the postcard we recently received from Staples.  They have $10 for us that they are willing to exchange for our email address. What is in it for Staples?

When a company wants to be this generous, it must mean that their reward is so much greater than the $10 they are offering to each customer on their snail mail list.  This $10, plus the cost of printing and mailing, will save them much more than this offer cost.

We can surmise that they are hoping to reduce their printing costs by pushing catalogs and all kinds of other digital advertising our way.  They most likely will have online promotions (not available to others who withhold their email addresses). For those those of us who cannot stand the thought of another email arriving daily, we will just have to miss out.

If you are experiencing a FOMO moment (a fear of missing out moment), let us assuage your fears.  Our research revealed that the in-store kiosk has those same promotional items, without burdening your digital mailbox. If they don’t have a kiosk in a store near you, one of their 61,500 employees (2016) can do the job of ordering that item for you.

Nina Hollander given what we purchase at Staples annually, it is not worth their while to give us anything.  And on many occasions I have found Amazon prime less expensive for the same product, and they don't deluge us with emails at all.  The only emails I get from them is that they are sending the item, they refunded me, or the reading list because we read so much.

Brian England peace of mind is a priority for both of us, and constant emails are a source of annoyance for us.  There are several vendors whose unsubscribe link does not work, and we have relegated them to spam...The more peace of mind we have, the better we work.  A

Different strokes for different folks, as they say, Alexandra. Staples is the best source for my printer ink and I haven't found it cheaper anywhere else and with their rebates it saves me easily 20% off the cost of my ink each year, not including additional coupons that they send me.

This is certainly an interesting promotion. It could be a good deal for those who with to receive email from Staples.

Many of us add our email address to lists for free.

Ron and Alexandra- in a word...no. there are so many offers on the internet now that you have only to look.   Like Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I am attracted to the 20% off and/or free shipping offers.

Kathy Streib I did a bunch of Christmas shopping on a site that had free shipping.  I like the vendor and had been subscribed to.  They were annoying us with sometimes 2 a day emails.  A

It seems like every time you make a purchase, it's the first words out of the sales clerk's mouth, "What's your email address?" I don't even get a "May I have..." anymore. It seems to be an expectation. I have to laugh when I say, "I don't have an email address to give you." I always get that blank look, almost, terror look back with a, no seriously, what's your email address. And if I just calmly repeat, "I don't have an email address to give you," they roll their eyes and sigh and suddenly, my email address is skipped!

I had to laugh at Nina Hollander comment. I also have an account with Staples and not only did they not offer to buy my email address for $10, I never get any special rebates, coupons, or anything in exchange for my business.

Nina Hollander I understand the ink for printers.  We bought an HP printer (99$ from Staples) that has $3.23 monthly for ink subscription.  For us it works perfectly as we do very little printing, except for contracts, boarding passes, and other miscellaneous items related to the business.  It also scans.  When it knows that we are about to run out of ink, it ships cartridges to us for replacement.  Cheers!

I just tell people our email is deluged and I don't want anymore emails.  Some like CVS for their discount card demand one, so I give them my Gmail account, and them promptly unsubscribed.  I rarely look at the Gmail account.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - That's too funny! Recently, I spent several hours unsubscribing to junk emails. If you don't nip it in the bud immediately, it never ends!

This is a great blog post!

I'm a tough customer.  I won't sell my email address for $10, won't open a new line of store credit for a 20% discount, etc.

I had to chuckle about your gmail account - because I do the same thing. I go there once a month or so, just to delete everything. The only thing that comes there is junk mail - and plenty of t.

As for Staples - I used to enjoy that store. Now that they've downsized, it's no fun to shop there, so I don't.

Staples just closed the store near me and it is a drive to the next one.

I mostly buy ink for the printer there.

I have so much garbage offers coming to my email I am about to hire a full time unsubcriber assistant.

Staples is a 5-minute walk from my home, so I use them a lot. Last week I received 3 different coupons. I needed #10 envelopes, so I bought a box of 100 envelopes, 2 reams of everyday copy paper, and 2 packs (6) scrubbing sponges. My total cost: $2.79!!!

I smiled all day!

I commented here last year, but came across this again and had to add a recent development.

Years ago Staples used to send me trial products to test. It was fun to get unexpected things in the mail and all I had to do was go on line and write a short review of the product.

Ever since then, they send me coupons in the mail. I just got a new one a few days ago. These are $10 coupons good on any regular priced merchandise. A few months ago I got one of those and knew I needed some office supplies, so stopped in. But guess what? All of the things I needed or wanted were "on sale."

I got another one just before Christmas, so stopped in again and found the same thing. Nothing I was interested in was offered at "regular price."

I've decided now that the $10 coupons are a gimmick to get you in the store, where you probably won't be able to use them.

Marte Cliff we agree with you.  We also get coupons from Pet Smart, CVS, and they all have expiration dates. L OL A
