Scenic Views & Unforgettable Moments

Scenic views are glorious fleeting moments that can last in memory and better yet with great photographs. How you see the world through your eyes versus a camera makes a big difference. When it comes to landscape and/or action photography, I have learned that you may only have one shot, and if you have to think about it first, you may miss an extraordinary opportunity. Assuming you can do it later, at a more convenient time rarely gets the same results. For more discussion, see a few of my favorite photographs captured on my recent vacation to Switzerland and Sardinia. Time period late March, early April 2018.

From a drone's eye view, I think my Nikon 18-55mm DX did pretty well! Considering the steep, very narrow and old wooden stairs + the final ladder to the top without much ventilation inside the Bell's Tower of Giardino di NS Del Soccorso located in the Capital City of Sardinia, the Province of Nuoro, was challenging while lugging my camera & personal belongings to the top and back down, Still and all, I was very pleased with the shot. I captured the city and the landscaping down below, and the Mediterranean Sea.

To capture the rooftop of an historic church, I climbed a great distance up a treacherous hill to get my shot of the clay roofing tiles. It was in these shots I realized my lens wasn't powerful enough to get it all in one shot. Nonetheless, I got to see some breathtaking views.

I started taking photos of my daughter on the day she was born. From the moment she learned to walk, she has been jumping ever since. Taking action shots is a hit or miss. In this photo, I only had one chance to get it right. Something I learned is that you don't just travel, you capture the essence of the spirit of the people who shared the experience and you snap one incredible moment at a time. Digital photograph has made it much easier and enjoyable. Traveling with a camera gives one peace of mind. Protecting the camera from moisture and sand is critical.

For me, waiting for the sun to rise before taking photographs is always a challenge. Notice the right side with the covered bridge is much brighter at Lake Lucern. Getting there early to shop at the market for fresh produce, cheese, fish, flowers, and bread didn't give me much time to take photos with my iPhone before the market was flooded with people. There was no time to go back because my daughter and son-in-law had other plans for us to visit more exciting places. Sunrise and sunsets make interesting shots. You can start your photo journal with or without the crowds. I prefer without them. This way, I'm captured in the moment with peace of mind. Climate makes a big difference too. Architectural patterns seem to be infused with the aesthetic quality of the city.

I welcome any comments that would be interesting to add on the topic of Scenic Views and Unforgettable Moments.

While I enjoy all of your photos, the one with your daughter leaping into the air is my favorite. Was that at the shore of the Mediterranean? Forgive me if that's completely off the mark, my knowledge of geography is sketchy at best.

Hi Pat Starnes, Brandon, MS - You are right! It was on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. We stayed on the Italian Island of Sardinia. I wrote about 4 previous posts (for members only) with additional photos and more information about our travels.

Michael Jacobs - I'm so glad you have been following and enjoying my vacation journal. I was afraid I was boring everyone.

By the way, the photo in this profile is me in the doorway of the closest grocery store to my daughter's house. It belongs to the farmer/neighbor. Everything inside was grown on the farm or a product from their animals, i.e., produce, fruit, juice, honey, eggs, cheese, bread, home made noodles, jam, desserts, etc., are for sale from the Farmer. There's no lock on the door. People who live around there can go inside anytime, day or night and make a donation for the food they need.

Myrl Jeffcoat - I feel the same way. Their architecture was built to last and so interesting too (see comments I wrote to Michael Jacobs).

Here in Flower Mound, houses age a lot faster than Chicago which I always thought was odd since Chicago temperatures are wicked cold for at least 9 months out of the year. I talked to my sister a few days ago and she said she's still getting freezing temperatures and she's sick of the snow, grey skies, and freezing wind/ice.
