If you live in San Diego but rarely venture east of the 805, or if you’re considering a move to the San Diego area, here are some reasons you might just want to take a look at La Mesa before making your next move.
1. Location, location, location! La Mesa is just 9 miles from downtown San Diego and has easy access to Interstate 8, Hwy 94 and the 125, meaning you can be most anywhere in central San Diego, or the beach, in just minutes. You will also find all your favorite stores such as Macy’s, Target, Staples, Walmart, Trader Joes and Best Buy in and around Grossmont Shopping Center.
2. Character and charm. Tired of cookie cutter communities? La Mesa Village straddles La Mesa Blvd and offers a quaint combination of restaurants, bars, antique stores, art galleries and many other unique small businesses. Strolling through the village is a great way to spend a weekend afternoon. Or how about a drive up to the cross and amphitheatre on the top of Mt Helix to take in breathtaking views across the county?
3. Things to do. Besides the growing number of great restaurants such as BoBeau, and Tiramisu Trattoria, La Mesa has a large number of activities including a Farmer’s Market every Friday evening, a 3-day Oktoberfest, Back to the 50’s Car Show every Thursday evening in summer, an Antique Street Fair and Christmas in the Village. You can also enjoy a free concert on Sunday evenings during the summer at Harry Griffen Park or a good workout on the secret stairs!
4. Great neighborhoods. Although La Mesa does have several commercial zones, it is primarily a residential area with several distinct types of neighborhoods. Live close to the village and you’ll be within walking distance to shops and restaurants. Live over near Lake Murray and you’ll have easy access to the Lake and the regional park. Other areas of La Mesa offer tree-lined streets, many parks and an interesting hilly topography, giving it the nickname, “Jewel of the Hills”.
5. A variety of housing choices. If you have a healthy budget, some of the nicest luxury homes in the county are available on Mt Helix, many of which boast views to the ocean and Mexico. On a more affordable level the median price for a 3 bdrm 2 bath single family home is $585,000 and for a 2 bdrm 2 bath condo, $325,000. Overall the median price for single family homes in the county is $635,000 and $477,000 for condos, thus making La Mesa a more affordable option then many areas of the county. La Mesa also offers a large number of rental options at affordable prices.
