It Is Not For Me To Judge...

After I posted Ted Kennedy Is Fighting For Life. And It Is Not A Bullet... , I have received a number of comments form both Ted Kennedy's admirers and critics.

I usually respond to each comment, but I couldn't do it this time.

When I wrote this post, I reacted to the news, but I did not know much about this man, his ups and downs, achievements and failures, loves and hatreds. Headlines in the Soviet press were not a trustful source. And even if I knew, it would be an act of incredible arrogance for me to judge him. I am here not to preach, but to listen. Today I am a student of American life, and you are my teachers.

I had high hopes that the comments would be civil, and, thankfully, they were. They show that no matter how differently we see the events, people, their legacy, we can handle it and not slip into vengeful rhetoric. It did not happen and it shows that we are better humans than we sometimes think.

For me, as immigrant, this was a lesson in civility. I am grateful for it.

Jon,

What you wrote expressed compassion. Everyone, even Kennedy deserves compassion at a time like this.

You didn't really say anything about Kennedy. You did say a lot of good things about yourself.

Jon, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and whatever anyone thinks of Ted Kennedy, I wouldn't wish cancer on anyone!

Bill - I goofed last night and you still find nice words about me. Thank you. It is, by the way, very American (in the best sense).

I am afraid you are overestimating me. I feel like getting credits for what I didn't do or do not deserve. Interestingly, after 17 years in the country, I think more about that whole two countries- two systems thing. This could be because of a genuine interest shown by you and some others, which I did not expect

Tony & Darcy - I can definitely relate to that. In 2000 my wife had a major cancer surgery. With very slim chance given to her by doctors, she is with us, fighting every day with inconveniences, caused by the surgery, but free of cancer (I am knocking on the wood)

Jon - You didn't goof. Regardless of Ted Kennedy's political decisions and 'personal problems' (which I grew up knowing about), has given a considerable amount of himself to our country, that facet of his life should be admired or at least respected.

Had you known about his past, public and (not so) private, you could have still written the same post.

Vitginia - Yes, but without the factual mistakes. It is especially awkward in time of Wikipedia and Internet. But who said it is ever late to learn?
