Even This Stager Had to Be Shown...

You’ve probably heard your stager or your agent tell you that your buyers have to be able to see the space. This is especially true of your garage clutteredgarage.

For many years, our two car garage held one of our 3 cars, in addition to 2 bicycles, 8 kayaks, and about a dozen radio-controlled airplanes. (and yes, some plastic bins for storing items for staging.)

And for a number of years, my husband suggested that if we edited what we no longer wanted, needed or used, we could get 2 of our cars in the garage.

I kept looking and saying “No way!” Even if this is a two car garage, I didn’t think we could get 2 cars in and keep some of the items we needed.  Remember, in Florida, there are no basements for all of the extras we have.

Well, one day, we got a bee in our bonnet and decided to see if we could get two of our cars in the garage.  After a few trips to donate items we no longer needed and a few transactions on CraigsList and OfferUp, we were ready to try it.

Even though this home stager could not see the space for two cars...there was!

The point is if a professional home stager who does this all of the time can’t see if a two car garage will indeed hold two cars, then how do you expect your potential buyers to?

Don’t leave it to your buyers to believe what is written in the MLS or what they are told by their agents.

Show your buyers by editing what you have and showing them your two cars in the garage.

The garage is definitely an area I tend to not over investigate, but a nice clean up job there is impressive...just as it is anywhere else in the home.

Gita Bantwal So many garages look like one big storage area.

Absolutely James Dray you're never too old to learn something new!

Donald Urschalitz exactly!

Nina Hollander I agree. And our attics get so hot in our summers, you have to be careful what you store there.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson We even had one of the kayaks hanging from the ceiling. Almost came crashing down on the car! OOPS!

Gabe Sanders I'm more surprised when I see a clean garage!

Dorie Dillard you are one lucky lady!!! Geno is my hero.

Looks like you can get two really big cars in there. What happened to your staging material?

Kathy,

It happens to all of us...we don't see it, and then we do, when the space is clear.  You reminded me that we need to clear our garage.  A

This photo looks like a three-car garage to me, Kathy, LOL. In Sacramento, parking in the garage is not a major factor. Most people don't park in the garages, they use them for storage. I mean, I park in the garage, for example, because I want my car to look nice, but my husband parks in the street. Just easier, he says . . .

Maria Sapio it occurred to me that if I had trouble seeing it, so would my clients.

Michael Jacobs I am living proof of it.

William Feela it is more important than people think.

Barbara Todaro And you have no idea how happy I was that two of them were in the garage for the hurricane.

Beth Atalay trust me, I've seen garages that looked as if they could barely fit 1 car.

Chris Ann Cleland It's more important than people realize. I was with an agent once who told the sellers not to worry about their garage because no one cared about it.

Joe Pryor I wish that were my garage. I kept what I absolutely needed. So we do have 2 of our cars there and shelves along the wall.

Brian England That first picture is of a home I consulted on about 8 years ago. Thankfully, ours was not that bad.

Ah, we have been doing a lot of editing also.  I started in January in my closet, and Ron in his.  We did the kitchen cupboards, and we have things in the garage that could go to Salvation army.  You are right, it is VERY FREEING.   A

That's a great point! My husband builds canoes in the garage, so it's always been full of stuff. Well, we had a need to use the garage recently to actually, uh, park a vehicle, so he cleaned it out. WOW. We can now put TWO cars in there and it's an amazing thing.

I know I've said it before - I'm neurotic about clutter. Really makes me crazy. The garage needs attention, but Bernie can't get rid of his treasures. We need to compromise. Lol.

Hi Kathy:

We see lots of garages here in homes for sale where the garage IS for storage not cars. LOL. It's an excellent point, though, and buyers often do want to be able to see the complete garage and are sadly disappointed.
