Friends of mine have poured their blood, sweat, tears, hearts, souls and courage into Monroe Lip Sync, a fundraiser for college scholarships for Monroe High School students, every year since 2004. The Show must go on is a time-honored phrase originating in circuses - even if the elephants stampeded, the Show went on, to keep the audience from panicking.
Lip Sync will not be going on. With only 11 days notice, the committee coordinating this Herculean - or maybe P.T. Barnium - effort had to cancel because its venue abruptly closed its doors indefinitely - an equally upsetting occurrence, the Wagner Performing Arts Center is lovely, well-used and well-loved. Lip Sync will be back, better than ever, for its final year on Saturday May 11, 2019. In the meantime, students still need help. And it is frustrating that all I can do is write a check. No amount of empathy can truly make this better, stop the disappointment for the performers, the audience, the students whose funding may now be jeopardized. Uncertainty is an ugly lesson.
