How to Put the Local in Your Local Posts.
Many years ago when I began writing posts about local events in Delray Beach, I would wait until the day before or day of the event.
But one day a member wrote a post pointing out the error of my ways...well not just my error but those of us who waited. You see, when someone is searching for events in their area, they may begin a few weeks or more before the actual event.
To prove my point, I Googled events in Delray Beach and found that articles had been written 2,3, and 4 weeks in advance of the event.
So, should you decide to write about the local events in your area (BTW...keep in mind, this is solely your choice to do.) here are a few tips to get you started.
1.Give your readers advanced notice when you can.
Time gets in the way, I know, but if you plan, you can post your local events here, on your website, on Facebook, Google, and Pinterest in advance of the event.
2.Give your readers a calendar or summary of events.
Dorie Dillard writes about many of the local events in Austin, TX but she also publishes a summary of events for the upcoming month. It’s definitely worth looking at!
3.Take your own photos when you can.
Copyright issues notwithstanding, taking your own photos is the best route to go. If you aren’t able to, contact the event coordinator. They may be able to provide photos from their media package.
4.Attend the event, if you can.
Of course, it’s always nice to be able to speak about an event or place with firsthand knowledge.
5.Share your tips based on your own experience.
What better way to show that you are the local expert than by adding your own perspective.
Share what to bring and what to be sure and see.
6.Name, rank and serial number are for the military.
Anyone can find that on the Internet. The value of your post comes from your perspective…. your knowledge of the event and the area.
Choose to write these or choose not...it’s always your choice!
