How to Put the Local in Your Local Posts.

Many years ago when I began writing posts about local events in Delray Beach, I would wait until the day before or day of the event. local posts

But one day a member wrote a post pointing out the error of my ways...well not just my error but those of us who waited. You see, when someone is searching for events in their area, they may begin a few weeks or more before the actual event.

To prove my point, I Googled events in Delray Beach and found that articles had been written 2,3, and 4 weeks in advance of the event.

So, should you decide to write about the local events in your area (BTW...keep in mind, this is solely your choice to do.) here are a few tips to get you started.

1.Give your readers advanced notice when you can.

Time gets in the way, I know, but if you plan, you can post your local events here, on your website, on Facebook, Google, and Pinterest in advance of the event.

2.Give your readers a calendar or summary of events.

Dorie Dillard writes about many of the local events in Austin, TX but she also publishes a summary of events for the upcoming month. It’s definitely worth looking at!

3.Take your own photos when you can.

Copyright issues notwithstanding, taking your own photos is the best route to go. If you aren’t able to, contact the event coordinator. They may be able to provide photos from their media package.

4.Attend the event, if you can.

Of course, it’s always nice to be able to speak about an event or place with firsthand knowledge.

5.Share your tips based on your own experience.

What better way to show that you are the local expert than by adding your own perspective.

Share what to bring and what to be sure and see.

6.Name, rank and serial number are for the military.

Anyone can find that on the Internet.  The value of your post comes from your perspective…. your knowledge of the event and the area.

Choose to write these or choose not...it’s always your choice!

Kathy,

I made the mistake of recommending an event here in Santa Barbara without having attended it in prior years.  When I did attended, I thought it was poorly done and embarassing.  The upside is that Ron and I seemed to be the only ones that felt that way, the parking lot was crowded and folks were enjoying themselves..LOL A

Kathy:

Very inspiring post for a local point of view---The value in that view is an unknown until you experiment and get results---some of which you may never know unless you get the call yourself. But in my experience I always like to go the extra mile anyway, just in case. It does pay off---I get many of my listings through my local blog posts!

Good point. I typically look for things way before the event, so I should remember that when writing about events!

Never thought about that. I have learned also that when you are doing an Open House on a Saturday or Sunday you have to start advertising the open house like 4 days in advance because by Wednesday people are already planning their week. Thanks for sharing this. Great post.

Hello, Kathy great advice, Yes Indeed, most of the events are posted in advance so the audience will see it ahead of time. Also, most of the fly-er and promotion on this days are also can be seen ahead of the specific date of the event.  So anyone that can see, if they want to come they will be marked their calendar.

It's a great idea to post events in advance.    We would have to start and maintain our own calendars and event contacts to follow up on the new dates in advance of the public announcements each year.     Sounds like a good mid winter / slow season task.

Yes, you should be writing several weeks prior.  And, that reminds me that I have to get going with my July 4th article.  My plan was to do in May...and now it's May.

I vote for advanced notice of local events.

From a personal view point I look at my calendar and it is rather full for several months. If I can see an advance notice of an event that I would really like to attend I put it in my calendar and try to schedule around it. A day before and the chances of my being able to attend are very slim.

Thanks for the great post

Great tips on reporting on local events. Being there has several benefits. Not only in the way of having the experience and taking pictures. Rubbing elbows with the community is free advertising that can be very helpful. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing this, Kathy Streib. Doing posts about an event ahead of time makes sense as I'm usually looking a few weeks ahead myself. Also, having attended an annual event previously does give a personal experience perspective to share.

Dear Kathy,

Great idea. Many events occur every year, so you can always recycle good pictures from the year before.
