Three Movies Left Me Feeling Low. It’s Not Supposed To Be That Way Is It?

Writing a movie review is not something I tend to do...in fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever written one. That said, this weekend we were loaned DVDs to 3 recentmovies movies. All were nominated for at least one Oscar.

The acting in all of them was excellent. But at the end of each one, I was emotionally down. It was similar to the feeling I’d have after some of my patients in grad school.

And if you know me at all, even if only from my posts, then you’d know that I’m 99.9% of the time very upbeat and positive.

One movie was a biopic about Tonya Harding (I, Tonya), the other was a coming of age movie about a young Sacramento girl (Lady Bird), and the third was, well, for lack of a better word...weird (Get Out).

Don’t get me wrong, they were all interesting as well as thought-provoking. The acting was outstanding.

But, at the end of the day, after seeing all three back to back, I was spent so (mind you, this is no excuse, and I’m sure Barbara Todaro is shaking her head)  Larry and I headed out for hot fudge sundaes!

It’s not supposed to be this way, is it?

Would love to know what you thought of the movies!

There was a movie recently that I watched on cable (name is escaping me) but it made me downright angry.  It wasn't supposed to, but the main characters were victims all the way through.  Poor me over and over.  I couldn't take it.  What a message to put out there.

Gita Bantwal I prefer the movies with happy endings too.
Barbara Todaro my tastes in movies are all over the board. I've seen the Godfather about a dozen times but then again, I've watched Guess Who's Coming to Dinner at least twice that.

Kat Palmiotti I wouldn't Not watch them because they are good movies but you have to be in the right move.

Nina Hollander you'll like them. My mistake was watching them so close together.

Dorie Dillard those are the kind of movies that I'd rather watch at home (which I did) because I can then pause them and take a break.

Donald Urschalitz they're good movies but I,Tonya made me wonder what she could have done had she had a different family background.

Gabe Sanders I thought that Get Out was interesting but I'm not a big fan of scary/weird movies.

Wayne Martin That's exactly how I felt.

Dianne Goode watching the news is bad enough, right?   I cried like a baby after watching Saving Private Ryan.

Michael Jacobs It's not that I didn't"t like them but I was bummed after watching them. You might like Get Out.

Barbara Michaluk I am so surprised...the clips make it look like a comedy.

Dusty Rhoton SRS, MRES, ABR, SRES, GRI  I think this is the first year when we had not seen any of the Oscar nominated movies. And, the sundae was excellent.

Hannah Williams I'm glad we didn't pay for it either. And, I would have been ok if Larry had wanted to turn it off!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® what a great idea!!!! I'm going to check out his website.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents I think you're right...wasn't in the mood for them. I liked all three but I also felt like I needed a drink after each one.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty can you believe I've never seen that movie!

Myrl Jeffcoat I can see why you'd have an interest. I liked the movie but between Tonya Harding's mother and husband, and Lady Bird's mother, I wanted to put on an episode of Leave it to Beaver.

Myrl Jeffcoat haven't seen that one but I do love Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks.

Chris Ann Cleland I'm ok with a movie if it entertains me but some I've seen, I am glad I rented and did not pay to see in the theatre.

George Souto Did you see Dunkirk?  What did you think of it?

Kathy,

Like with eveything else, we keep the downers out of our life.  Ron and I met Tonya when she was our good friends client.  Eventually they let her go..  A

We are just not movie folks...even rare TV  shows have to either make me laugh or cry....since there is no more Columbo I don't want to think...(who dunn it ?)  that's not my idea of entertainment...or maybe I am too antsy to sit still for hours...when it seems that the producers stretched the script to last five times as long as it should....we just say No....other good excuses for popcorn !

Burnout can be a real thing in that sense. Movies don’t always do the track every single time in that same way

Morning Kathy.

Last year was a record breaker for me.  I went to the movies twice.  I suspect it won't happen this year.  Blood N Guts, spy stiff, CIA thrillers, now that's my kind of movie

I hadn't heard of Get Out, but was looking forward to the other two. I've got all three in my queue for Netflix. I'll let you know what I think. I won't watch them all at once...I've spaced them with comedies in between. LOL

Perhaps as we get older, wiser, more mature, we also become more sensitive to the negative that surrounds us.  There was a time when I could watch WW II movies, but no longer, at least not as a steady diet.  However, one movie I did not regret seeing just a few weeks ago was 'Saving Private Ryan.'  How can anyone forget the beautiful story and the deep meaning:  "...Tell me I've led a good life;  Tell me I've been a good man...."  (Kathy, sorry if the words are not quite correct).   Perhaps your 3-Movie, back-to-back afternoon is just too much 'heavy' for most of us. Nice you enjoyed your sundae.

None are on my list to see.  I have zero desire to see a movie that would leave me down.
