Well, another week has gone by.  Wednesday, I took my mother to another one of her chemotherapy appointments.

As I had done in the past, while she was getting her infusion, I took the walk down to Starbucks.  I had my usual, a Vente Mocha not-too-hot with whip (whip me).  I also picked up another gift card to give to the other caregivers back at Doctor Darosa's office.  While I am indulging in my mocha I sit in one of the upholstered chairs and write a quick little note on the little envelope that comes with the gift card.

"I too am a caregiver and I know what you are going through.  I am taking care of my mother who is going through chemotherapy currently.  I know how important it is for the caregiver to just sit back, relax and take a break sometimes.  Here is a gift card for a drink at a Starbucks"

I then enclose one of my Prudential cards with the gift card.

I came back from the Starbucks and handed the card off to Tina one of the chemo nurses and asked her to give the card to one of the caregivers.  Unlike last week, Tina waited until I was gone to give the card out to one of the caregivers.  I actually like it that way it's more anonymous and random that way.

I'll find out from Tina next time I see her how the caregiver liked getting a "little break".

If you're ever at the Castro Valley Starbucks located at Lake Chabot Road and Castro Valley Boulevard on any given Wednesday around 10am, be sure to say hello.  I'll be the one filling out the gift card envelope.

I think this would be nice if every Realtor would bring along a gift card to their doctor's appointments too and give the caregivers they run across a little break in their lives!

Michael, That is very thoughtful of you!  I bet it makes that person feel special to know that somebody is thinking of them.  I hope your mother is doing ok.

I think this is wonderful.  It is always terrific to get an unexpected kindness.

That is a thoughtful thing to do. People always appreciate the little unexpected things. And all the best to you and to your mother.

This last week I gave another gift card away to another caregiver.

but what I wanted to comment about here was the response I got from the card two weeks ago.  Nurse Susan gave the card to Pam.   Pam is taking care of her husband Brian who has tongue cancer and it was looking rather bleak for them for a while.

Pam wrote me a nice email thanking me for the gift card to Starbucks giving her a break.  I was so touched by her heartfelt message.

I was so glad that I could help someone out.

I urge everyone, stop by a starbucks or someplace like that and get a gift card.   drop it off in your nearby medical center's oncology department and give instructions for the nurses to give them to caregivers.

You'll be a hero.   It's a very good feeling.  Add a quick note telling them that you appreciate the unsung work of the family caregiver.  Include one of your business cards so that they can contact you if they wish.
