I got my hands on the office FLIP VIDEO camera. Here is a quick look at this amazing little device. It will not replace my Sony Mini DV camcorder, but I can see where this can be used for some interesting applications. My overall first impression before turning it on that it was big and the plastic gave it a cheap feel, but after working with it a for few hours it is really growing on me.
I shot a video blog just a few minutes ago on my Green Screen setup with the FLIP and will post it later. Now let's take a look at this device.
16 Comments on Flip Camera time to put it through some tests
Ted- I enjoy my Flip video camera very much. I need to get my use out of it but that is not the cameras fault. I look forward to your next post with the camera.
I will post a v-blog I just did in the next 30 minutes Adobe is rendering the video right now and then it will be uploaded and processed by youtube. It's coming. Also I have a great v-blog cooked up for tomorrow which will be an answer to a question on Trulia. Stay tuned.
Frank,
It's a complete no brainer video camera.
It is totally plug and play.
The software is on the camera so you don even need an installation CD.
It loads your videos to your "My Documents/My Flip Video Library" folder so you don't have to go on a major expedition to find wher the device hid your files.
No cords, no cables
The picture quality is outstanding
Bang for buck is there
My second grade daughter could figure out how to shoot and upload a video to youtube without my help. My technical skill are way beyond this device, but for a person who wants to get good quality video, this is much better than what I can get from my coolpix camera.
Now for the negative, I like the flexibility of a real camcorder. Certain applications this flip is perfect, others, I will have my camcorder with me.
Ted, I follow Frank's question. If you shoot a video on your digital camera and it's saved to your SD card, it's just as easy to upload it onto the computer, right? Does FLIP offer a much better quality? What's the true differentiator here? I'm missing something as well.
Ted, Thanks for the post, and the info on the flip. I'm leaning toward purchasing one real soo. I think what Frank and Irina are missing ins the quality of the videeo as opposed to what you get with your point and shoot still camera. The video I'm seeing looks 10x better than what I get with my camera.
Frank,
As alluded to, is the quality of your camera comparable? Most I have seen are not. Jeff Turner has reviewed several cameras and I think has the alternative if you want an all in one Still/video camera.
Again, an extra part when dealing with chips and requiring a different skill set for those less technical. The Flip is a great alternative for those looking shoot good quality video with a no brainer approach to uploading to an online service, it is completely plug and play no need for extra hardware or software it is totally self contained.
I have cannon digital rebel xti and this means I will have the need for a video camera.
I just looked up the v570 vs the flip. They are both "VGA-quality." Which doesn't matter since most people will compress them another 90% to share them online.
So same quality as the camera you have today. But now you carry 2 cameras so that the flip can go in easier? I still don't get it. But they sell millions... so have at it. I say spend $11 and buy a USB SD card that pops out of the camera and into a USB slot on your computer. http://tinyurl.com/3jxa7h Heck I just bought another one.
Do you have a name? I am going to post a bog article on camcorders. I prefer camcorders over all these little gadgets like the FLIP, but there are time that the FLIP is al you need.
The following video I shot with mostly my Sony HC-38. I did shoot two scenes with the FLIP
