You Just Joined ActiveRain - Now What?

Yesterday, Rich Schiffer said the following in one of his posts:

"What can be done to motivate new members to actively contribute to the AR community and grow their business through quality blogs?"

That's certainly an excellent point -

I've been participating on ActiveRain since October of 2006 and yes, I know this topic has been brought up before!  BUT - all of us need to do our best to make Newbies welcome and productive.  This IS a networking site and the more people that know you and your ideas, the more successful you will be in the Business world.

Laura Monroe said it very well: "Every member is a potential client,  a referral or better yet, a friend."

I could post tons of links to articles that are designed to help you Newbies out - but there is an easier way!

Just check out the Newbie Group that was started by Karen Hurst. It's one of the most popular Groups with 657 Members and 1395 Posts.  Want some help?  Read as many of those posts as you can!

Here are a few other tips :

  • Just jump right in- you may be new to blogging, but start writing as soon as you can and you WILL find your voice.
  • Don't be 'afraid' of the older Members - Are some of us a little loud-mouthed? ABSOLUTELY!  (Not me of course, LOL). But as a Newbie you're bound to get needled a little bit, but it's like an initiation - don't take it too seriously!  Some of the Members that gave me a hard time when I joined have turned out to be great people AND a big help.
  • Don't stress about the POINTS! -I know, it's easy to say that when you have a lot of them.  But if you are active and you post, comment and add to ActiveRain you'll be very surprised at how quickly they add up.
  • Show a little humility!  I don't think any of the more successful Members have any self-confidence problems! However, when you're new don't try to make yourself sound like the best thing that ever existed in the Real Estate world.  Confident is great - cocky will just get you ignored.
  • Stay ACTIVE!  If you just joined to post a picture and your phone #, no - you're not going to get any contacts or business from your 'effort' because you really haven't done anything!  Post as regularly as you can and always remember to reply to the comments that you get.  Even if it's just to say 'thank you' make sure to show your appreciation of other Members' input.
  • Trust the fact that if you are active, business will come from it.  Not immediately, but it will happen.

I could go on for the rest of the morning, but I do need to get some work done!

As a reminder of how quickly ActiveRain is growing, check out Matt Heaton's post from 11/26/06: ActiveRain Turns 6 Months Old Today.  It took 6 months to get 9718 Members - now, just over 3 months later there are 18845 Members - something must be working......

***************************************************************************************

Oh, it's working!

As of today, April 26, 2007, the Newbie Group has 1388 Members ... AND

Almost 1 year later - April 25, 2008 the Newbie Group has  5011 Members

***************************************************************************************

Lastly:

  • Newbies - what questions can we help you with AND -
  • Members - what other advice would you like to give?

Thanks Marc-as one of the active "newbies" I appreciate your comments. I have only been here 2 weeks and already feel like one of the crowd. I read, comment, and post daily before or after my workday. I have already become a new group moderator and been featured 3 times. Its so much easier to just jump in and start instead of waiting for the perfect time.

Also if I could request could you also start posting to the "Rookies Turning Pro" group. This would be an excellent post for our fledgling group and you seem to post many articles that make great reading for newbies!

Many thanks for all of your great information!

OK, just because you have the biggest Group -that doesn't give you the right to brag!

Well, maybe just a little......

03/03/2007 05:07 PM by Palm Beach Real Estate and Loans - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

Hi Mark~ Thanks for the link, and your points are great! It can be a little intimidating at first, frustrating later on, but in the end AR is awesome:) Great blog!

03/03/2007 05:12 PM by Laura Monroe- Real Estate Virtual Assistant (Creative Agent Solutions.com)

Stephen-

Thanks - and I'm glad things are working out for you.

Also, thanks for the invitation to post in your new Group.  I went ahead and joined and edited this post so it would be included there.

Hi Laura-

Things certainly can be weird at the beginning - no doubt about that.....

BTW - I like Colbert too, Stewart is great  but I love Colbert's attitude - did you see his interview with Larry King?

03/03/2007 05:24 PM by Palm Beach Real Estate and Loans - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

Thanks for the post Marc.  There are a lot of very good writers on AR -- and it can be a bit intimidating to those of us who may have something to say, but may not have the same knack with words, design, photos etc.  I think the newbie section has been very helpful to me and now it is a matter of finding time to post.

03/03/2007 05:35 PM by Joan Whitebook, ABR, e-Pro, CEBA (Buyer's Option Realty Services)

Good advice Marc, nice to know someone is watching out for us newbies.

Hi Mark~ No I didn't see Larry King, I wonder if I can find it on Comedy Central..? I'll check it out. Those guys are hilarious!

03/03/2007 06:05 PM by Laura Monroe- Real Estate Virtual Assistant (Creative Agent Solutions.com)

Marc,

Yes, good post with good content is good for all of us.

Good Mario :-)

03/03/2007 07:14 PM by Mario Levesque, Tampa Realtor (Advantage Avenue Real Estate)

Marc,

I just wanted to let you know I like what you had  to say. Yes it has been said in a  number of ways but there is plenty of room on the server....so fire away! I have noticed a few introductory blogs for new members.....I think that is great when someone makes the time and effort to introduce a newbie to the AR community...consider the reponses handshakes!

03/03/2007 07:21 PM by Ron Withers (Town & Country Mortgage Services, Inc.)

Like you said, this can be a bit intimidating for those of us who feel we can contribute but are cautious.  I've done enough reading here to see that not everyone here is as friendly and welcoming as you are, there are a few meanies...which is to be expected in a group of any size.  At this time I'm working on what I hope will be a decent first blog entry, but I'm also looking around to make sure it doesn't appear to be recycled content!  In addition, I need to learn how to put in the neat graphics and links.  Call me a perfectionist, but until I'm happy with it, I'm not going to expose myself to unwarranted criticism.  Once I think it's great, bring it on... until then it stays in draft form.

Marc, thanks for taking up this issue...I couldn't help but notice that your title for this post is a bit similar to a recent post of mine...So, You Found ActiveRain -- Now What?

Great minds think alike!  LOL

03/03/2007 08:40 PM by Rich Schiffer, REALTOR, e-PRO (Weichert, Realtors)

Marc, this is exactly what we need to do in our efforts to encourage quality blogging. In addition, I would challenge you to personally strive to achieve the very best in your own writing efforts. I very much enjoy reading your posts and know that your greatest value to our community is by providing consistent excellency in your posts. Thanks for all that you contribute to this great platform!

03/03/2007 09:41 PM by Rich Jacobson ~ ActiveRain Community Builder (ActiveRain Corporation)

Nick,

Don't get Marc started on Rachels... we had a former employer that would love to take the entire office there after work when he was in town.  We could think of many things that he could make better use of his money for the employees instead of taking them there.

03/03/2007 11:08 PM by Knightlines Mortgage Services, LLC

Nice post and insight Marc.  Some good tips because it can be intimidating swimming with the proverbial sharks.  I would dare say the humility part is vastly underrated here on ActiveRain.  In the Real Estate World, like life itself, mistakes are made.  We all can learn from them and even though oft times we don't come off like the best thing since chipped ham, we provide the ultimate link & shared experience...that of being human.

03/04/2007 03:29 AM by Jason Sardi, Pennsylvania Mortgage Broker (First Choice Equity Group Inc.)

Careful Marc, you might become the sweetheart of Active Rain!  It's great advice and a worthy post.  It's amazing how many new people are around here.  I received my Realtor magazine yesterday but was too tired to look for the AR mention.  Anyone know what page it's on?

03/04/2007 06:35 AM by Chris Elizabeth Griffith ~ Bonita Springs Fl Real Estate (Keller Williams Elite Realty, Bonita Springs, FL)

Joan- it can be difficult to start- but don't get bogged down by the flashy stuff  I'll take sincere over fancy and day!

Brian- Thanks- just make sure to help out the next group of new Members...

Jeff- Thank you!  Are you still having that Tournament down here in a few months?

Mario- Good point - better content does help everyone out.

Ron- 'Handshakes' is a very good way of putting it.

Debbie- There definitely are a few 'meanies' out there, it's a small number, but they do stand out!  Don't let it hold you back.

Nick & Jason- flashbacks! No, please make them stop..........

Rich- Sorry about the similar titles - but like you said" Great minds...!

03/04/2007 10:11 AM by Palm Beach Real Estate and Loans - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

Rich-

Thanks!

I know other people mention that they see / have seen posts like this before - we do have to be consistent in our efforts to help out.

It looks like AR grew by about 105 New Members since my entry yesterday - what's your prediction for the end of 2007?

03/04/2007 10:17 AM by Palm Beach Real Estate and Loans - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

"I would dare say the humility part is vastly underrated here on ActiveRain."

03/04/2007 10:22 AM by Palm Beach Real Estate and Loans - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

Marc,

Thankyou for taking the time to write this and also posting it in the Newbie Group. As others have said, yes there are different posts regarding this subject, but the way Active Rain is growing, we could feasibly use a Post each week.

Everyone here starts out as a Newbie, no matter how much experience they have in their field. So many are intimidated and never even get started. Let's hope your straightforward post will alleviate some fears.

03/04/2007 03:45 PM by Karen Hurst ~ Real Estate Broker ~ Warwick ~ Rhode Island (Storm Realty LLC)

Marc,

Thank you for the helpful information. This is a great site with so much great information. I'm a newbie jumping right in. Once again...Thank you!

As a newbie to Active Rain, I think my biggest qustion is about BLOGGING. How do people find my blog and how do I get dialogs started with people on my blog? I get the concept of blogging a little. Still foggy on the steps to get it to a level that works. Right now it feels like no one is going to find my blog and the contents. Other than blogging, what else can I do to participate?

03/04/2007 09:14 PM by Link Moser - NH Lakes Region (NH Link Realty LLC)

For All The Newbies...

Blogging is a learning process.  The more you do it, hopefully the better you get at it. (Talking about me personally, it could be hopeless)

You will find a lot of people on here that are willing to help you along the way.  Take the help offered and start reaping the benefits of Active Rain, there are a LOT of them :-)

Dont worry about what others might say, come up with your style and run with it.  That is the nice thing about so many different people. You have different styles, opinions and great conversation, it keeps everything interesting.

03/04/2007 10:07 PM by Brande Bradford... South Metro Atlanta Luxury Living (Bradford Realty Group)

Thanks for the advice. I discovered this community from the Realtor Magazine and I have no experience with blogging. There are many posts that I can implement that will help my business. Thanks all.

Marc,

Thanks for the excellent information.  This is exactly what I was looking for.  I haven't started blogging yet, but...any day now.

03/04/2007 10:14 PM by John Summers (Keller Williams)

Great blog. Never hurts to be reminded of the basics.

03/05/2007 01:12 AM by Adam Forney (First Realty GMAC)

I am new to AR and this message helps alot with encouragement.  It is hard to put your points out of your mind when you see some folks that are clearly just posting to add to the post total.  I guess I am still struggling to find my voice as you say.

03/05/2007 01:29 PM by Patrick Brady (RE/MAX Masters)

Thanks Marc. I am new to Active Rain and it appears that there is a lot I can learn from the fellows realtors.

03/05/2007 01:45 PM by Hemang Upadhyaya (RE/MAX West Realty Inc)

Sorry it took me so long to respond - pretty busy down here!

Link- Once you start posting articles you'll notice that they go into a 'most recently posted list' that people check throughout the day.  Also, by posting to specific Groups you can get to a more closely focused bunch of people. Check the description of the Group to make sure you're in the right place!  As far as dialogues, when people comment, just comment back.  Once you're comfortable with AR, you should check out Localism.com.

Brande- Good points! Except for the 'hopeless' part - you're doing fine!

Wayne- It's corny, but true - we all had to start sometime.  It's a lot easier then you would imagine - good luck!

03/06/2007 08:15 AM by Palm Beach Real Estate and Loans - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

John- You're welcome. Now get started! LOL.

Adam- Thanks!

Patrick- Yeah the 'points' thing will always be discussed, but the people who are here for nothing but that will eventually fade away and the people who are putting forth a real effort will come out on top.  Don't let it keep you from getting started!

Hemang- Very true - and don't just stick to the Realtors. Check out people from all of the different Professions, you'll be surprised at what you learn.

03/06/2007 08:20 AM by Palm Beach Real Estate and Loans - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

Thanks for the advice.  I'm a newbie and I'm looking forward to joining this community.

What's with the points?  I see that everybody is talking about them and there seems to be alot of stress built up because of them.  Do these points have a value?  Are people encouraged to only read posters with big point totals?  Is it just bragging rights?  Do I have a chance of getting my material read if I have very few points?

Thanks and I love your name!

03/06/2007 02:54 PM by Kevin Blasi The NEPA Mortgage Man

Kevin-

Another Blasi!

Quite a surprise......

There can be a lot of stress w/ the points - but so much of it is silly.

You get points for almost everything you do on AR and Localism - just not for actual advertising.

I 'stressed' about the points when I started, because I knew someone that had about 3000 and I HAD to beat him!!!

If you are active your points will grow and in just a few weeks you'll be shocked at how many you have.

The Members with the higher point totals do get read more often , but that's just because we've been around for months and a lot of people know us.

If you write quality articles people will find you soon enough and you'll be fine.

You can 'subscribe' to the blogs you like to read the most - if you go to my profile and click 'subscribe to' I'll show up in your list.  When I'm done with this comment I'm going to 'subscribe' to your blog and I'll keep an eye on you and try to help you out.

Good Luck!

Hey Marc, you bet, I like the just "jump right in" the best.  I think people who join are afraid of what others might think, or say.  It took a little time for me to really get to know people.  Now there are so many great people out here I have come to know, it really is a great place to come.  Great group too.  Thanks again.

03/09/2007 07:12 PM by Bob Sloop, Consultant, Indianapolis, IN (RS Mortgage Consulting)

Hello Marc,

Thank you for all the insight you have given to us "newbies". I must say that I am overwhelmed by the amount of information that I am finding on ActiveRain. It seems that whenever I read a post, I am clicking on a link and finding even more great stuff to read. Digesting all of it is another matter entirely. You are so right, the tips and the advice on the Newbie Group has been wonderful. I have posted a couple of times and I hope to post again soon. Anyway, thanks again.

Bob-

Thanks! - It's a shame that some people are afraid to post because of what other Members might think.

There is a lot to be gained from the interaction once you get going!

Lisa-

It is hard to avoid going from link to link - but the amount of (and quality) of information is fantastic!

Good Luck!

Don't stress, write a post or two, maybe a few comments and you'll be surprised at how the little things get taken care of.

Good Luck!  Let me know if you have any questions.

thanks so much for your help - it is a bit overwhelming - not the blogging - seems like i always have an opinion - but i respond I am not sure if I am responding in the right spot and if it is getting back to the person that makes the comment

03/15/2007 09:49 PM by lorraine leff (first american lending)

Lorraine-

You have the right idea- just comment the way you did here and your response will go in the right place.

If you comment on a very old blog the person who wrote it might not respond - but that's pretty rare.

Wow, Marc, you are so right.  To keep moving forward, you probably can't  have a wait-and-see attitude.  I think your advice can be applied to all areas of our lives. Staying active is the key!

Where do I sign

03/25/2007 07:44 AM by Internetwork$

Marc-i'm new and i've jumped right in. i'm a home stager, just north of NYC. What exactly am i posting?! Am i writing in my own blog about myself--my successes, my funny experiences, my concerns? do people really want to read this? and is it correct that i want to include the proper buzz words, so that the search engines recognize me? i'm going to put the AR link on my company website. And i will check the site often, and write comments (that seems straightforward). but i'm still a bit unsure as to what i should write in my own blog, that others will find interesting. any insight is appreciated...

03/26/2007 08:57 PM by Jill Steinberg (Showcase Your Space)

Hi Jill-

I know it sounds vague, but you really can write whatever you want.

As an intro post you might want to introduce yourself and say what it is that you do, then after that talk about specific projects, suggestions, etc.

Humor is definitely OK!  Anything to lighten up the day is fantastic.

Yes, you are right about the 'buzzwords' (and also links, tags...).

Commenting often is good and always remember to respond to comments people leave on your own posts.  It doesn't have to be immediate - but it shows that you do care about what you wrote - just a respect thing.

Good Luck!

BTW - what part of NY?  I was born in FarRockaway and I went to high school up in Nyack.

Wow this was very beneficial for me to read today!  This is a phenomenal group at AR, but I have still felt a "tad" intimidated when it comes to posting and my topics.

Thanks for the great words of wisdom!

Amber-

Thank you very much!

Don't let yourself get intimidated - people might raz you when you're new, but you'll get past it.

Good Luck!
