This morning I stopped by to take a few photos at the Relay For Life®.  It was held at the Bonita Springs YMCA on East Terry Street.  For the record, I actually had customers to work with this morning so I did not participate with the Bonita Springs Association of Realtors.  My daughter, Jennafer, was participating with her fellow members of the National Honor Society of Estero High School.  Her camera malfunction and she begged me to stop by and take pictures.  (I think she knows I always have my camera for blogging.)  So I swung by and snapped a few photos - two birds, one stone - and posted a blog to share the Bonita Springs Relay with everyone.

The turn out looked great.  There were a lot of volunteers and a lot of SURVIVORS in attendance!  Unfortunately, there are still too many memorial luminaries.

From http://www.relayforlife.org/ : Relay For Life® is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back against this disease. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team keeps at least one team member on the track at all times.

Relay is much more than a walk around a track. It is a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived. It is a night for people who have shared the same experience to comfort and console one another.

Naturally, there was a complete list of characters ... and their parrots in attendance.

This fine gent was selling raffle tickets as a fund raiser.  In addition, there were booths offering Starbucks coffee, doughnuts, a bounce house and various games and activities.

very nice Chris - we also do Relay for Life here in Miami Shores - do they do the purple pelican there as well?  Where neighbors sponsor signs of a purple pelican to sit on their lawn for $20/day and it all goes to the relay?  It's fun to see those purple pelicans all over town.

Chris, So glad you posted this, got a call yesterday from a gal that asked if she could bring information on this to our office, I had put up posters for her before on a Breast Cancer Walk. I told her sure, but had never heard of this. What a wonderful way for the community to get involved! I'm very interested in the Purple Pelican too.

Purple Pelican

Here's a Photo of a purple of pelican - it "nests" in people's yards for as many days as they will sponsor him.  On the back there's a list of people and how much they donated.  It really is a great way to get additional donations, especially for those that don't like to attend the event.  A lot of real estate agents are responsible for finding the nesting spots around town.

That is such a great idea.  I wonder who thought of it?  I wonder why I haven't seen them here.

Hey - get on the ball and start asking - I think you can use this idea in your part of town - and there's pride in having the pelican nest on your lawn, it's pretty cool.

You are welcome.  This is a great event!  Just a few days ago was my first relay and once you participate you appreciate what you are doing much more.  My team got so excited we are already planning to participate in a neighboring event.  Look for more articles about the Relay for Life soon.
