Do you remember the last time you moved? You got rid of all the clutter and stuff you didn't want instead of packing it up and taking it to the next house. The spouse and the kids had to get rid of their stuff too. There were piles of old clothes, pens caps, bicycle parts, jars full of salvaged screws and pennies, boxes that stuff came in, saucers to cups you didn't have any more. I bet you felt good getting rid of all of that stuff by giving it to charity nor having the yard sale to beat all yard sales.

As Realtors and Stagers we have all been in houses that had to much stuff. And as objective observers consulting on the sale of the property we suggest getting rid of their stuff. We suggest charities, yard sales, boxing it up and in some other way getting it out of sight.

But what happens after the sale,or we move ourselves? We unpack all of our stuff to find out we still have to much stuff. Why did we keep that? What purpose does that have? And now we have to find space for the stuff all over again. But inevitably we want new stuff for the new house. After all our old stuff looks strange in the new place. Yes, we need new stuff.

So with the best of intentions we go and buy new stuff, better stuff, stuff that we are going to have forever! Stuff that has a purpose, that was on sale, that will always fit, that is better quality and therefore will never break.

All the stuff we own was shipped, hauled, boxed, handled, re boxed, re shipped, delivered, stored, used, washed, reused and deposed of.

Next time you jump in the car, drive to the store and open your wallet. Think about all the stuff in your life.

11 Comments on Stuff

Dena we are all guilty of this.  I have stuff in my basement from the last move.  Since I have not used all this stuff in six years I plan to get rid of it all this spring.

How true!! I moved last summer..not only did I move my families home, but my parents and my mother-in-laws as well.  I know about stuff!!  We had the big yard sale, several trips to the dump, etc.. and now I have a garage of stuff that I don't want in my new home as well...that was the stuff I just had to keep and wouldn't dream of selling or throwing away...and to think..I'm planning to go to Wal-Mart this afternoon..

Dena I still have stuf in my basement that was wedding gifts in 1974, and have never been used.  I break out in a cold sweat just thinking of ever moving and having to go through all that STUFF.  Do you think I could leave it behind for someone else to enjoy......LOL

Hi Dena - I thought this was going to be a psychological post about counting how many times you used the word "stuff".  j/k - we are a generation of "consumers" and it would help if we did not buy so much stuff we don't need or worse, we already have!  Let's start teaching our kids about it too.

Stuff - Ugh. Too much stuff. I have a box of "stuff"that I have successfully moved from house to house w/o unpacking it. It has been 4 years. Hm. I think I will throw it away now... or auction it off as a mystery box on eBay...

Mariana, I like the mystery box idea

George, think museum pieces

Shari, Walmart is a challenge for me too. But I know I don't need 99% of the stuff there.

Ines, you and I think to much alike. I was going to ask people to count all the 'stuff' in this blog and thought better of it.

Jennifer, I'm as guilt as anybody else with all of my stuff.

Dena,

Yep, guilty as charged. I have STUFF. In the basement, under the stairs etc...but let me add one more version of stuff...my husbands: We moved with 3 boxes of car parts (stuff) 4 times....not just from house to house, but from Germany to the States, then within the States and then finally from house to house (in the same city)...AFTER that is when he finally got rid of it. (Because you never know when you might need that part....However - after that last move - we didn't have the car anymore where those parts would have fit!)

Sabine made me remember a story about STUFF - I have a ton of architecture books (at least 20 boxes worth).  When I moved to Venezuela, I sent them in a container and they got stuck in Haiti for 2 monts, they finally arrived and I unpacked them.  Then we moved back to Miami and I sent them in another container and they got set to Europe by mistake and finally arrived.  They have been moved to 3 different homes and 2 offices - they are the most traveled books in history.  Talk about cultured stuff!

Dena.

My guys and I see "stuff" every single day.  After I opened my business, it made me more aware of the amount of stuff we all have, how much stuff we throw out and how hard it is sometimes to give away our stuff to others.

I was never a person that just went out and bought stuff for the heck of it, but now that I haul away other peoples stuff, tons every day, I make sure I don't waste money on useless items.

Eric, I was at the Colorado Springs Home and Garden Show this weekend and saw one of the 1-800-GotJunk trucks. When I stopped to talk to them I was impressed that approx 80% of the stuff that gets picked up is recycled! Yeah team!

Dena,

We (1-800-GOT-JUNK?) try to donate and recycle as much as we can for 2 reasons:

  1. To help people/environment
  2. To lower our expenses (landfills and transfer stations do charge!) and is a very large expense for us

The amount we can donate/recycle varies from city, day, situation, but we are always trying!  Why I think we are a good solution because we are not a dumpster service where everything goes right to the dump.  We load the trucks, so we know what is going into them and don't allow chemicals, etc.  We also can sort the items to make stops at recycling and donation centers.

Don't get me wrong, there are times that we do have to dispose of items that could be reused, but that is due to a lack of places to take the items from us or other constraints.  If we had a choice, everything we hauled away would be recycled (and I would save a ton of $$ in disposal costs)
