ThrowBack Thursday: A Viable Solution For Keeping Koi Alive & Well

Both Ron and I love koi ponds.  When we lived in Los Angeles, we spent a weekend digging a koi pond for our lower garden.  We also made a smaller pond out of a large barrel for our upper garden.

We then drove miles to the Japanese community in Gardena and bought all kinds of beautiful koi.  And we also made a trip to Santa Barbara to buy koi, because they had specimen koi! A week later, the upper koi pond became the preferred  four star Michelin restaurant for all the raptors that lived in our trees.  We discontinued that pond.

On the lower pond, we had problems maintaining the PH level.  And all the koi died.  We dismantled it and filled it  We planted a Meyer lemon tree where the pond once was.  If only we knew about the koi pictured above.  And they do come in all sizes and move around...

Cheers

Great Gif Ron and Alexandra Seigel - Sorry to hear about your  experience with Koi. They are so beautiful.  I had a listing in Sedona with a really nice Koi Pond.  No issues with birds and winter weather.  Sedona Koi Pond

Hello Ron and Alexandra Seigel , I'm so sorry your Koi didn't survive. I never had one and wouldn't even attempt to start a Koi pond, just admire the ones other people have.

Alexandra, I sold a home many years ago to a client who moved back to NYC and kept the house... he periodically would call me to feed the fish when his person could not make it... in two years I had duty three times to run to the Hollywood Hills and feed the fish:)) every time I went there were fewer fish... he said that he must have been helping the Raccoons:))Endre

Morning A.

It's never too late to build another one.  Good thing is you won't need to feed them

Good morning Ron and Alexandra.  I can certainly relate to your Koi experiences.  I have a neighbor that has replaced his Koi with little rubber duckies.

Hi Alexandra... it was probably hard losing your koi... loved your alternative. I have a friend in Charlotte who keeps his koi pond covered as the heron liked to feast on them for breakfast. But he kept his koi alive and growing for well over 10 years for some of them.

Hi Alexandra and Ron - I have clients with koi ponds, predators are definitely an issue.

Just love what you're doing with your posts lately - photos and the looped video of this one. Those plastic fish might surprise a heron or two...

I keep looking at this - is it a photo or a video?  I may have to get an iPhone X.

Very cute.  Why not throw in a rubber ducky to keep them company?
