Not Just Another Day…
The further away we travel from significant days in history, I am concerned that they will be forgotten.
Does anyone remember the significance of June 6? Or July 20?
Some days we will always remember but other than celebrating them, it is as important to remember why they are important...how they impacted those who lived through them...how they impacted the world, even if slightly.
Today our friend Vic is remembering what happened on May 18, 1967. (View the CBS special they did) He was in Viet Nam and after being shot in the back by the North Vietnamese Army, he had to lay there and play dead long into the night and the following morning when he could be rescued.
There were only 7 survivors that day.
He had to lay there and play dead while the NVA sat but a few feet away and ate their lunch.
He was there while his Sgt. called in artillery on top of his platoon...it was his only choice.
This was not just another day for Vic or the men in his Platoon.
Some of you weren’t even born yet. At the risk of giving away my age, I was graduating from high school that month.
But I knew about war and the horrible things that would happen to these young men and women.
I wish that no one ever has to go to war again. (and by the way, this is not a political statement whatsoever.)
But I hope that those who are our future know that going to battle is more than what they see in movies. I hope that it is not what they see when they play a game on whatever device they have.
There are real people out there who are putting their lives on the line for us.
Last night (the 17th) we had dinner with our friend. He is as emotionally stable as anyone I know. And yet, I know that today will not be just another day for him.
You can read a post that Vic shared on my Facebook page.
