Not Just Another Day…

The further away we travel from significant days in history, I am victor renzaconcerned that they will be forgotten.

Does anyone remember the significance of June 6? Or July 20?

Some days we will always remember but other than celebrating them, it is as important to remember why they are important...how they impacted those who lived through them...how they impacted the world, even if slightly.

Today our friend Vic is remembering what happened on May 18, 1967. (View the CBS special they did) He was in Viet Nam and after being shot in the back by the North Vietnamese Army, he had to lay there and play dead long into the night and the following morning when he could be rescued.

There were only 7 survivors that day.

He had to lay there and play dead while the NVA sat but a few feet away and ate their lunch.

He was there while his Sgt. called in artillery on top of his platoon...it was his only choice.

This was not just another day for Vic or the men in his Platoon.

Some of you weren’t even born yet. At the risk of giving away my age, I was graduating from high school that month.

But I knew about war and the horrible things that would happen to these young men and women.

I wish that no one ever has to go to war again. (and by the way, this is not a political statement whatsoever.)

But I hope that those who are our future know that going to battle is more than what they see in movies. I hope that it is not what they see when they play a game on whatever device they have.

There are real people out there who are putting their lives on the line for us.

vic and larry

Last night (the 17th) we had dinner with our friend. He is as emotionally stable as anyone I know. And yet, I know that today will not be just another day for him.

You can read a post that Vic shared on my Facebook page.

Something I will never be able to fully comprehend....going through such a nightmare, horrific experience like that is beyond my thought process. I get emotional just reading about it.

I must agree with your statement about war being different than what we see in the movies.  Movies in the past often focused on the glory of war, while diminishing much of the personal pain in injury and death.  It pains me to see what veterans often go through when they come home.  I wish as a country we could find ways to ease some of that pain.,

Kathy, to me the shame is how little support we have in our Country for these heroes and for our first responders. I watched a press conference on TV a couple of days ago...the mom of a fallen police office was clutching the arm of the President. We need to see more of that...and less porn star lawyers and the like.

Kathy,

Ron and I have been knee deep in a project with our clients and their support of the Navy Seals.  We have heard the stories of Medal of Honor recipients, and one of the sentences that will always be in my head is: "Freedom is not free, it is written in blood!"  I tear up every time.  A

Hi Kathy Streib - You are right to be concerned. Two days that are very significant in our history. I personally remember being glued to the TV screen on July 20th, but have only read about what took place on June 6th.

I heard first hand the horror of Pearl Harbor and both people I knew are no longer here to give their accounting of that day.

As for Vietnam, I remember hearing the horror stories first hand from Vets in college. But what I remember vividly, was the way many of our Vets were treated upon their return home.

Another day that is in jeopardy of being forgotten is November 22.

I have no relatives who served in Vietnam, but I have friends that will never be the same after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Even in our 24 hour news cycle where big news becomes old news in no time, the effects of things like the terrorist attack in Nice, France become forgotten.  That is, until you have dinner with a friend was who was vacationing in Nice during that horrific attack.

As the world gets smaller, so much gets overlooked or down played in the overload of information.  Events like December 7th made an impact because that was THE NEWS.  Not anymore.  The 24 hour news cycle has numbed us.

Donald Urschalitz totally get it.  and I have a feeling common sense has left the room.

Barbara Todaro and they were not treated well either.

Sham Reddy you are so right. We are given the chance to make a difference!

Nina Hollander mine as well. Going to the Wall in D.C. is a sobering experience.

Michael Jacobs that is so true. Many have no idea what these men and women have endured.
Wayne Martin They were difficult for many and it's so important that the following generations understand this.

Thank you, Kathy, for posting that link to Dropbox where I could read it. I generally don't like reading about war and casualities and first-person accounts that make me weep, but this was exceptional.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat I agree. They never received the "welcome home" that others have and they are very deserving of that. And appreciate the feature in your group!

James Grant And they were just boys who were over there fighting.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I agree. If we never hear of the "K's" again I would be happy.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel Vic said there were I think 3 Medal of Honor recipients from that battle.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® you're absolutely right about that day. It's so important for the other generations to hear veterans speak and tell their stories.

Hi Kathy... the Viet Nam War Memorial is the only such memorial that never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I also cried when I saw the big hole in the ground where the WTC towers stood.... but that was a different kind of "war" and not a memorial.

This is a very moving story, please extend my gratitude to your friend for his amazing courage and service.  I do hope that our world grows beyond the evil that creates government corruption and war.  So many are suffering under dictatorship and corruption, and America is where they come to escape.  However, it's time for the evil to he stopped so that people across the world can be safe and prosper in their own homes and countries.

I can't imagine going through what veterans have to go through.  Laying on the battle field when you desperately need help would be terrifying.
