House in a Box by Abod

Welcome to your humble Abode. I mean Abōd®.

What it is: A home that is shipped in a box.

Components: Plexiglass Panels and corrugated metal.

Assembly: Four guys sharing a screwdriver and an awl. (Six packs sold separately.)

How do I get one?: Check out this website- myabod

Manufacturer's Slogan: “Every family deserves to live in a home designed by an architect.”

Architects have been challenged to find a way to build long lasting homes quickly, at a low cost. BSB Design rose to the challenge; the result is Abōd® homes. These modular designed homes literally arrive in a box. They can be assembled in a variety of ways by those who need little skill. The result is a low cost home built to withstand two to three decades of use. It's the ultimate low-income starter home for the third world.

Check out their gallery.

Are they insulated?  How do they stay warm or cool?  These would be good for disaster recovery, too.

Love living small (would love to live in an RV and just travel here and there) so the 'abod' is right up my alley.  Pretty neat.

Virginia- they created this solution for South Africa and other areas of the world where such housing could be easily erected.

Doreen- It's obviously not a "for everywhere" solution but pretty cool nonetheless. The site gives quite a bit of background on the problem the sought to tackle... I think they were quite innovative.

Susie- My family spent a month in an RV one summer ... stopping at one beach town after another. It was such a blast.

Chuck - I've seen similar things for third world countries.  Thanks for sharing

Chuck  Thanks for bringing this to our attention.  Imagine the possibilities....  municipalities across the nation could house the homeless for less than it costs to provide social services to them.  Sometimes I feel dwarfed in my 980 square foot home; perhaps I should look into it for myself  :)

Interesting.  Kind of like the homes they built for the military that was supposed to me temporary that turned into permanent stuff.

I think we need to continue to explore this type of housing for many markets. Do we really need to have 3,000sqft homes and storage lockers to keep all of our stuff?

Best,

Scott

I love it. I live in a kit home from 1984 and considering where I live it has turned out to be a very durable product. This product might be a great way to expand for a nice garage and workshop.

What a great solution to low-cost housing!  Thanks for sharing, Chuck--a modern day quonset hut.

Designed for the third world or not. I want one. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Kelly- I've seen the block ones... these seem to have some personality and can be assembled in a variety of ways.

Anthony- Why not be a test buyer? I'd love to hear your experience!

Denise- I think this is sort of the solution they had in mind... refugee camps too often turn into permanant housing... so why not make it a full solution instead of something halfway there?

Scott- There's a manufacturer of "delux" small homes... I'm going to need to find that link.

Sabrina- That's awesome... do you have info about the manufacturer?

Kent- Seems like even I could build one of these.

Dave- It would be cool to have one of these.

They look very interesting Chuck! In certain areas, I'm sure zoning laws will have a field day with them!

Thanks for posting! I had not seen these!

Chuck,

Thanks for sharing this great information!  Looks like these homes will bring affordable shelter to those who normally would not have any.  I wonder if the cost will decrease if they are mass produced!

Mary- Thankfully this design beats that of the tent communities that pop up in some of these regions.

Michelle- I would hope that the company could be able to continue to innovate and be rewarded for so doing.

Chuck,

With land at such a premium price....the smaller the home the better......

I could see my wife and I in one of these....almost empty nester's....LOL

Dan- I saw a graphic once that showed the square-footage-creep of the average home. Although our homes are pricier than they used to be the cost per square footage (after inflation adjustment) showed that we're still paying close to the same amount. I wish I could find that chart it was very interesting.
