Debbie, thanks for commenting on my blog.  That picture is beautiful, is that a resort area or do people live near the lake year round?

Hi Timothy, It's a year round community but it's much quieter in the winter. Five hundred miles of shoreline. Did you ever see the movie 'What About Bob'? It was filmed in Moneta and Smith Mountain Lake. The area has been building up over the last few years and there is a large cinema, Kroger, CVS to service all of the townhomes and new developments that are springing up. The SMART people who bought at least three years ago can live there year round, you could buy waterfront for $250,000 now it's water view for $600,000 and it's only going up. It's an absolutely beautiful area, AEP created it in the 60's to generate power. There is a state park on the Bedford County side.

Hi Debbie.  I googled Lynchburg and blogs, and found you right off the bat!  My husband and I are considering relocating to the Lynchburg area.  He has an interview with a large company in a few weeks.  It seems they are already pretty sure they want to hire him, as they offered to have a real estate person take him around the day after his interview.  I have no idea who they will pick as an agent, but I imagine they already deal with one specific place.

I just wondered how you like where you live?  I was a born Pittsburgher and so was Mike, and we lived there all our lives until 5 years ago.  Then we moved to Cincinnati, and right now we are in Greenville, SC.  We are empty nesters as our kids are grown - Josh graduates from Ohio State in June.  Our Laura graduated from Penn State 2 years ago and lives in Norfolk.

Anything you can tell me about the area will be a big help!  I do secretarial work, but I'm hoping to go to school to possibly get a degree.  I've never gone to college.  It's my turn now!  I also quilt, crochet, read and am involved in community theatre.

Thanks!
Dorothy

Hi Dorothy! Did your husband interview at Areva? That's one of our largest employers and my husband is an engineer there. I LOVE Lynchburg! I'm originally from New England and have lived here for twenty years.  Lynchburg is known as the Hill City, there are a lot of them. We have beautiful views of the mountains from most everywhere in the city. If you like to hike, the Appalachian Trail is close by, the lovely Peaks of Otter, Blue Ridge Parkway.

We have several colleges in the area Lynchburg College or Central Virginia Community College may be the place to check into continuing education. Lynchburg has a population of about 60,0000 and approximately 60,000 in the surrounding counties of Bedford, Campbell, Appomattox, Amherst.

If you like a small town feel, you'll have to check out our lovely revitalized downtown. Restaurants, a Community Market with a Farmer's Market on the weekend, Antique Shops, Friday Night Cheers during the summer. If you love crafts, you will enjoy all of the craft fairs and festivals here! You can't miss the Sorghum and Garlic Festivals. There are a LOT of wineries in the area, we have a AAA baseball team, so if you like to go to games, that's one of my favorite things to do on a summer evening.

We have low unemployment, so if you want to work, you could. We have a community theatre here as well, great hospitals, heart center. A new cancer center is being built as well. If you're not locked in to using a specific agent, I would love to show you around and get any info to you. If you'd like to email me your address, I'd be happy to send you a relocation package. Thanks so much for getting in touch!

Yes the company is Areva.  How neat that your husband works there!  I'm so glad to hear so many good things.  Does your company handle Areva relocations?  I imagine they probably deal with one specific agent, but if we are given a choice, I will definitely mention  you.  They are going to mail us some relocation information, so I'll wait and see what arrives.  Thanks for the quick response!

Dorothy

p.s. We LOVE baseball and regularly attend the A level games here in Greenville for the Drive.  We already discerned that the AAA team in Lynchburg is affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates, my hometown team!!  And Mike loves to cook, so I can guarantee we'll be at the garlic festival if we move there.

Hi Dorothy, I'm with RE/MAX and we do help relocating families. If personnel only offered to have a realtor and you're not obligated, I'd be happy to show Lynchburg to you and work with you. My husband has worked at AREVA for 18 years and knows just about EVERYONE! He worked at the Old Forest Rd facility for 12 years and is at Mill Ridge now. A three mile commute for him! He loves the company, especially his group. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help and check out this site www.lynchburgchamber.org . It's our local chamber of commerce and there's lots of info for relocating families. Thanks! Debbie
