Nina,

That sounds like a lot of fun topped with fireworks and music.  This celebratory event to commemorate Mint Hill's existence is a good one...now, what there a lot of mint growing there?  It made me wonder of the name's origin.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I've never found a clear answer on how Mint Hill got its name... but it's not because of mint growing there. The town has been around since 1750.  And it was primarily farming land until the last few decades. Gold was discovered in Mecklenburg County (where Charlotte and Mint Hill are located) in 1799 marking a significant turning point in the region's development. Hundreds of miners, engineers, and fortune hunters poured into the area. Mecklenburg became the gold capital of the United States, and in 1837 the first branch of the U.S. Mint was opened in Charlotte. Charlotte's primary museum's name is The Mint Museum, as well. So, I suspect the name might have stemmed from this bit of history.

Nina,

I did not know there was gold in your state, as well as the first mint.  I also seem to remember that NC also had rubies, sapphires and emerald mines.  I do enjoy all the information I learn along the way.  A

Ginny Gorman ~ good morning, Ginny.... I suspect you might be enjoying better weather this weekend than we will. It's humid and we might get the tail end of the rain storms moving through Florida.

Sybil Campbell ~ hi Sybil... how did I not know that you grew up in NC. Where did you grow up? NC's gold rush is not well known in general... we just always hear about the one in California many many years later.
